Best Games Evarrr! [OP updated 13/01/15]
  • Choosing these based on the Games I Spent The Most Time With divided by LOVE

    10. Sonic The Hedgehog 3 (Mega Drive) - This just blew my tiny mind when it came out. Me and my best friend both got it, and spent months playing it, competing with scores and times.

    9. Forza Motorsport 2 (Xbox 360) - The first game I really played online heavily, thanks in huge part to the FNF we had via Oldrum. So many amazing laughs had when we wanted to, but also super serious racing too, which I was inexplicably and annoyingly good at at times. Such a shame we don't have the same numbers playing FM4.

    8. Outrun 2006: Coast 2 Coast (PSP) - This version wins because it truly shines on that screen. Almost perfect arcade gaming. Love it.

    7. Amplitude (PS2) - In my opinion, the best rhythm-action game there's been. Harmonix were already masters of the genre before anyone mentioned plastic peripherals.

    6. Pro Evolution Soccer 6 (PS2) - I've spent all of my gaming life playing various interpretations of The Beautiful Game. This still stands as the finest attempt at it.

    5. Tony Hawks Pro Skater 2 (PS1) - Much the same reasons Reg listed for 3. It was the right game at the right time for me.

    4. We Heart Katamari (PS2) - The game that changed everything for me. Stopped me from being so close-minded when it came to the hobby. Just couldn't believe there was a game like this out there, and it was ours. Made me think games were the best medium ever. (I'm not as eloquent as others. I can't put it into words gud).

    3. Virtua Tennis (DC) - Arcade perfection, pretty much.

    2. Power Stone 2 (DC) - See 3. Also, I had the Jap version about 9 months before it reached the UK. It was so awesome feeling like it was my own little secret, that only I out of my friends owned. Whilst they were buying the Fifa's and Need For Speeds and Goldeneyes of the day, I had my little Japanese disc of multiplayer mayhem, and everybody loved it. That disc and the console went with me pretty much everywhere.

    1. Rez (PS2) - Don't know what to say, really. Kinda like Katamari in that it really changed what I perceived games could do to me at that point. It brought out such euphoric emotions while I played it for the first year or so.

Safe to say that I'm not good at talking up games when pressed. Much better at this over Live, drunk.

  • The story so far.  Reading them together, there are some clear forerunners, inexplicably dominated by fucking Zelda.  Halo, MGS, FF and GTA franchises are also well represented.  I think, in fairness, we should press some of you to plane your list down to ten specific games.  If you've got a franchise in your top ten, pick your favourite, if your list has less than ten, provide more, more than ten, trim some off.  If you want to PM me edits, formats, exact titles and so on, I can keep it up to date, and JonB can add to the OP.  Any statisticians out there can play with the results.

OK - I choose Mario Kart DD over the original - 4 player, loads of karts and characters, enough options (selectable laps, powerups etc.) and it even has a LAN mode. The graphical quality means its probably the realisation of Miyomoto's vision when he commissioned the original. It's also got the Baby Park track which can be used as a mode all by itself.

I'll pick the PS1 version of T2K called Tempest X3 (mainly becuase it has more levels and it has T2K as an unlockable)
Holding the wrong end of the stick since 2009.
  • I'll make my 10th Burnout Paradise then, to represent a genre that I don't massively like but do play a fair bit of. It got more right than most and is still one I can pick up today and bomb around in for a while. Screw you Ultimate for not coming up with something I'd still want to play now.
  • Burnout Paradise was very very close to my top ten. Don't think I've ever played a game through from the start 4 times. I did with that, loved every bit.

Hence why I have massive expectations for NFS:MW.
  • I guessed at PS3 for JMW's BP.
  • Yep, that's the one I've got it on.

Yeah, but where would NiGHTS go? :-(

In Edge's excellent Ten Top Tens it appears with the platformers - Marble Madness, New Zealand Story, Pilotwings, SMW, Yoshi's Island, Mario 64, Super Monkey Ball, Jet Set Radio Future and Super Mario Sunshine.

That list could do with a polish.....

    Yeah, I remember the list.

I wouldn't consider NiGHTS a platform game though. It's probably a score attack game, I suppose.

    Doesn't do it justice.

  • Shit, Burnout 3 could easily be in my Top 10 actually. Played that to death and it remains the only racing game i've ever loved, outside of Mario Kart.

Also, only 11 PC games. Shocking. Stop using the box to post piffle here and get some classic games on there!

Its not just about timing jumps across chasms; platform games demand that players explore, negotiate and then conquer environments whether they be on the sea, in the air or in lava filled volcanoes. It doesn't matter whether you're controlling a ball or a man with a jet -pack, platform games share the same values.

apparently. I'd say Nights is pushing even this definition but then this item ignored the shmup and FPS - it has Halo, Rez, Ikuraga and Gunstar Heroes in the "shooter" category.

  • Yeah, not having a go at you I just never thought of it as a traditional platformer. But I wouldn't actually know what genre to put it in to be honest.

    EDIT: @Dave

Nights is pretty much a one off. I hear the Wii remake totally missed the point featuring long winded roaming around sections.

I suppose if Mario 64 is a platformer with its flying sections then you could kind of say Nights is a mirror image of it - flying with an admittedly very short roaming section.

Its actually closer to an on-rails shooter if you equate controlling Nights to controlling the reticule in Rez.

I'm just surprised at the lack of PC games, mainly because they always appeared leagues ahead of what was around at the time. I took a break from the Gamecube until recently, but I was always looking out for the PC stuff and envying it. A lot of it is dumbed down these days I guess, but they have still do some things that consoles can only dream of. RTS games have evolved a lot since the sublime AoE2, with Call of Heroes adding a new twist to it. It is a crime that people haven't played Mechwarrior 2 or 3 though. Everyone goes a bit weak at the knees to Steel Battalions UBER controller, but PC geeks were doing it years before. Mechwarrior 3 had controls for everything, walk one way whilst turning your chassis another and firing weapon group b at that enemy before using jumpjets to crest a hill and unleash a salvo of missiles on a enemy before flushing your heatsinks. Heh, I think PC gaming filled me with wonder as a kid because it was my Dad's schtick, and they just seemed so incredible compared to the PS1 stuff.

I couldn't get on with it, I have no sense of direction :-(

Burnout 2 on the other hand, was wonderful.

If you've got a franchise in your list, pick your favourite...

Not sure about this, but I think I'll remove Reach, Skyrim, and er... OoT or Wind Waker? Shit. Going by the game I'd rather stick on and play right now, I'd say get rid of OoT.  That was hard.  Seriously, I'm sweating here.

I'll replace them with Bioshock (360), Metal Slug 3 (Arcade/Wii), and Phantom Crash (Xbox). Yup, That'll do it. Positions don't really matter, I wasn't sure about them the first time and I'm even less so now.
  • Rather than asking me to follow those edits, you could just give me your top ten. PM if you like.
  • I considered a Civ, Grim Fandango and Counter-Strike but the former two just missed out and I wasn't counting mods.

I'd have to sub in Baldur's Gate 2 and Bayonetta for Final Fantasy IX (abiding by one per franchise, VII basically redefined my gaming expectations) and Majora's Mask.

    *I'll PM my new one.
  • I'll PM mine too.
