Call of Duty: Ghosts
  • Pleased popular opinion has finally caught up to this franchise being shit. In fact it's so shit that i'm often coerced into overlooking how utterly awesome the first Modern Warfare was at the time

It's gaming's equivalent to the Transformers Movies. Big dumb action and the COD series does it well. Except, this time, there is a noticeable lack of polish/budget.

    But the kids love it.

At the moment the kids seem to hate it. But they'll probably buy it anyway. Though how many more CoDs we'll see I don't know. Apparently BlOps II was a "disappointment" for the series, "only" selling 23 million copies.

I think the hardcore fans and the developers are getting fatigued with the series; for the former, buying a full price game every 12 months, all the DLC, stumping up for Elite membership, etc., is getting tiresome, and for the latter there's only so much innovation you can do within the CoD framework before you either run out of ideas or do something to ruin how it plays. I think this is going to end up going the way of the plastic instrument music games; too much too fast, so people get put off and it dies out. I doubt Activision will care, though...

Well Activision was the publisher for the Tony Hawk games and Guitar Hero... annual releases, milk, profit, kill it etc.

They've got Destiny now and iirc the contract detailed every other year releases, with dlc content alternating (i.e. something is released each year). Plus the writer and design director, Joseph Staten left Bungie in September.

There's quite a few people I've heard on my travels that are sick of buying map packs that they barely have chance to play before a new one is released. It's getting kind of silly now.
  • How else do you justify £35 though.
  • How can they justify £35 in the first place? Around 16 maps for the price of a full game? It's always been a fucking joke.
  • Because they charge a tenner for each map pack, so you save a fiver.

1200 points a pack did always seem a rip to me.
  • We've had these discussions before guys. Still king of the Live game play charts. Activision will spend the money on a proper reboot in the way EA do with FIFA if sales really slip.
  • Buy a decent gaming PC/PS4/Xbone.  Buy BF4.  Forget this shite.

I know I'm in the minority here, but I enjoy MW3 in multiplayer. I treat is almost as a racer though, where I fine tune my character to have the best setup for my style of play and then I just run around killing things.

I've never completed a single player COD. I've never done anything in the way of team tactics and I can't be arsed to organise strategy. For me this type of game works more as therapeutic release, which I usually do every few days, especially when I feel pissed of about something. A dozen games of MW3 online and all is good.
  • I must have said this a thousand times now, but for local splitscreen MP FPS CoD rules, nothing else comes close.

Nope - Goldeneye and some of these:

  • Yep, I bought that Reloaded hoping it'd be good for offline - utterly shite.
  • This is the worst CoD released in years. The fact they've removed 9 v 9 from the playlist on current consoles is a sin, the singleplayer is so rote and by the numbers it's appallingly boring and the graphics have taken on the 'cartoony' look of the Black Ops games by Treyarch. Gone is the lovely, subtle narrative and the beautiful animations of Captain Price and co. All that's left is a shallow, washed up shell of a game that was released in 2007. Infinity Ward have totally sold out. You can see blatantly that the talented half left to set up Respawn. I find it shocking that they didn't put the effort in for the next gen consoles and do a complete overhaul. It's too late now. This time next year there will be a new king of shooters thank God.

Such a shame as MW3 was actually great, despite a lot of folk not thinking so. It was easily the best campaign since Modern Warfare and the multiplayer innovated just enough with the specialist/support killstreaks though a lot of other stuff was rather OP. It's still great fun online and graphically far superior to Ghosts. What baffles me most is how people get duped so badly year on year.

Well obviously I'd say Halo trumps it.
  • Yeah but it's just team games, the CoDs have SpecOps, zombies and so on. It's just a more varied, interesting package. Also the controls and so on are really well honed - granted Halo's good there too.
  • I'd point to Firefight - ridiculously removed from Halo 4 though.
  • It's a zombies replacement of sorts, but the no1 that's not there is SpecOps, that's the main one.
  • Firefight was sublime. Probably the best co op shooter of it's time. That and Left 4 Dead. Who were the 4 from here that tried to get that recon armour repeatedly on ODST? Reach wave 5 or 7 or something on super hard. Took hours to no avail. Never did get it to this day but christ it was fun trying. I think Swirl was involved...

spec ops and zombies were great, they should just do a spec ops only download for less than half the price and id be in, same for zombies.

Aye. I have no problem with paid DLC but the prices for a handful of maps are disgusting, yet people blindly gobble them up year after year after year.
Call of Duty isn't the only culprit either, but it's definitely one of the worst out there.
  • People buy Blops map packs just for the one zombies map on it. It's madness.
  • Yeah, I remember people asking me which map pack had a certain zombie map in it.

A friend of mine sold his Freefall code for Ghosts on eBay, got £15 for it. For one map. Ridiculous logic.
  • I bet that person bought the game from Tesco because it was cheaper too.
  • Completed this last night. Story, script and voice acting all have taken a severe dive.
Played MP for 10 mins. Meh.

There's a great review on Rock Paper Shotgun, more entertaining than the game I'd say. Not linking from phone, too much like work.

    I was entertained.

I've decided I'm going to replay CoD 1 to see if it's still awesome. My teenage self loved it.
