That needs to go in the film and video thread, it fits in nicely with the inception discussion.
I'm surprised there's no mod for civ v that makes it look all alpha centauri-esque. I've still got my original copy of alpha centauri, the manual was ridiculously detailed, talked all about the science of the centauri system and other stuff.
They're the same guys that sell the close combat games. I would love to get a couple of them but £30+ for what is essentially a 20 year old game is to steep for me.
It has taken me several years to get over my intial anger at Civ 5. I felt that it looked very pretty but was nowhere near as immersive as Civ 4. I've now gone back to it and with the DLC (my rant on the concept of DLC should be saved for somewhere else) it has piqued my interest more than it intially did. The main problem is that the mods for Civ 4 such as Caveman to Cosmos or Fall From Heaven 2 were incredible and vanilla Civ 5 was never going to be able to compare favourably.
I've run through a couple of games now and it is growing on me although I am still trying to get my head around the differing mechanics to the previous versions.
The diplomacy really irks me- I did some reading, and came across some chats about there being diplomacy mods which I've not managed to get installed.
I've not won a single game as I've intended, still not had a tourism/culture victory- but I've been really close. Playing that way doesn't half make for a nervous game as you're constantly trying to maintain friendship, open borders, diplomats in key places whilst trying to maintain a grip on the UN when suddenly out of nowhere the AI goes armageddon on your ass and it's near impossible to boost tourism with music tours, etc.
One day though, one day.
What level are you playing at, Scot?
"Better than a tech demo. But mostly a tech demo for now. Exactly what we expected, crashes less and less. No multiplayer." - BnB NMS review, PS4, PC
Did the last game at Prince level but it was fairly obvious as I entered into the last couple of eras that I would win. By the end there was only the incredibly aggressive Polish left but while they were rampaging across the other continent I just turtled and maxed out the science output until I could build the spaceship. I only ever had one major war (against the Inca who were on my continent) and when that was over it was just a matter of popping the odd city on random islands when interesting resources appeared. More recently I've been having a crack at some of the scenarios. The Africa one was quite interesting and I'm mid-way through the pacific islands one now. I still have the feeling that something is missing from the game though that was there in previous versions. I can't quite place what it is but the 'just one more turn' vibe isn't as strong.
Civ rev on iOS is the single much buggy game I've ever played. It crashes all the fucking time.
He could've just said they came from another planet but seems keen to convince people with his bullshit pseudoscience that he knows stuff. I wouldn't trust him with my lunch. - SG
I cannot even imagine how a game that ran shorter than one or two hours would play. I certainly wouldn't want to play it. The original Rev was way too watered down for my tastes. Like Birdorf, I want a portable Civ with a little more meat on its bones.
I really really really wish that they would just port the full Civ 5 to pretty much all platforms. I can't see that controls would be much of a problem, it's mostly about resizing and designing the GUI. Consoles would surely be reasonable at least.
I also would REALLY love a proper portable Total War. Rome: Total War (just the first one even) on Vita would make me buy one.
I've been hammering it. It's pretty much a reskin from what I've read and very similar to the DS version from what I remember.
It's a real shame they didn't add a little more depth, stuff that could have been ignored on easier difficulties, but vital if you want to beat it on the hardest setting.
It screams lazy cash-in, but I'm loving it and have definitely had my ten quids worth.
