Civilization, create your own haves and have-nots
  • Bad start yesterday when I finally got up and running. Got pinned down by some unfortunately placed barbarian encampments, managed to break them down eventually but things were slow going. Feel I'm lagging behind the other civs now.

How does mp work on this?

  • Discovered a couple of awesome new tactics.

    1. In the event that the enemy looks likely to capture one of your cities, wait until the last possible turn then gift or sell the city to a lowly civ, and preferably one who's unlikely to offer open borders with your enemy.

    2. Take out a loan from a wealthy and distant opponent. For example, i just borrowed 2000 gold from the Chinese and offered to pay them back 100 gpt for 30 turns. Except instead of paying it back i declared war and so the debt was written off, and because they were so far away we struck a peace deal before they had time to send units my way.
  • I'm so much behind everyone else that almost making it to the age of chivalry in the tutorial, yesterday, was an achievement. Today, I intend to play a proper game so I can save it and carry on.

Add such, if there's any advice people feel is essential for sharing out, I'm all ears.
  • Can't help much on religion. I only once tried to boost my religious influence but couldn't seem to figure out how i use it to buy buildings.

Missionaries and great profits are the easiest way to spread religion.  It also spreads passively by proximity to cities with that religion, aided by trade routes and city connections.
  • Infoaddict is the most essential one, i reckon. It gives you access to a lot of stats which naturally helps a lot with diplomacy.

I'd also get a world map with realistic resource placement and starting positions, as there's nothing quite like a bit roleplay. Had a little look now, and apparently the best one is this-

    http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=77138438

I've apparently been using the not very good one, all this time.
  • Great Prophets are infinitely superior to missionaries, save up for them if you can, then try and convert a triangle of cities, they should all reinforce each other. Basically you need more cities of your religion than others near to a city you want to convert via influence, trade routes also add to the pressure. Build temples etc to keep generating lots of faith.

Awesome, it really is a great sandbox game. I still really love pulverizing a nation then getting them to give me all their resources/money, I've done that quite a few times now. Last I was playing I was getting attacked from three directions, Alexander, Venice, Ethiopia. Nightmare. I've had to go into full military production to try and hold them off, I've built a few citadels which are really helping, there's some ace bottlenecks on my landmass too, really lucked out with that. If I can just get to kicking the shit out of that cunt Alexander and get peace then I can hoon all them troops down to the other frontlines and push onward. Tough times, I may have to use your tactic 1 there, though that would be very galling, last resort. Enjoying the challenge though.

Aim for the day is to work like a loon and get stuff done so I can justify playing this tonight.
  • Sometimes though if you sit tight through the good times and let them stew they can get strong and bold later on and decide to attack, that's what's happened to me. I should've kicked Alexander's head in when I had the chance. But then I'm somewhat surrounded, if you've only got one border which another civ you might be ok.
  • Also don't go on a denouncing spree of loads of civs that have pissed you off, like I did. Because some of them were friends with my friends, and now I have no friends.

Except Egypt, but he's the other side of the world.
  • Gonz should play as the Greeks. Not just because their boost in relations with city states is awesome, but also for the symbolism.

Just starting a game now on the Earth map i recommended on the page before. It's nice because you can choose which civs you want and it places them all accurately (the earth map i was previously playing had preset civs to choose from). I'm going with 20 civs, almost all of them in Europe (Americas will be totally empty), 40 city states and on immortal difficulty.  Although i've yet to win on King yet, that's mostly been down to my fuckups, and i'd sort of expect a comfortable victory on my next playthrough at that level anyway.

We all come from Africa anyhoo.
  • I'll try Earth map one day, but I do enjoy not knowing what the layout of the map is, and exploring it all.

Shit, he has a massive army. It's taken to the seas, including a catapult. Problem for him, though, is I sent my quinquereme right amongst him. Think I'll stalk him, then sink the catapult if it's heading north. Ficking devious cunt

It's so fecking brilliant when you get subs and start wiping out all the lesser shipping. I remember doing that to Monte in my Morroco game, got him to give me ~200 GPT in exchange for peace, too. :D

  • Perhaps the Assyrians might give you something in return for helping them out, by declaring war on the Aztecs.
  • I like declaring war on a civ that's already getting battered. Sometimes you can get something out of a peace deal despite never having committed units to conflict
  • I still don't see the point of religion. Still, Geordiism is the dominant world religion. A couple of Great Prophets and an inquisition or two have spread the good word.

Religion = followers, some tenents, world proposals, enhancer beliefs work on a follower count to have an effect. +1 happy for every 5 followers, in all civs cities.

To buy buildings or great people, etc with religion you have to have adopted all the policies in an appropriate tree, exploration, aesthetics, piety, etc.

You can use religion to boost your cultural impact and win a cultural victory. Also you can win challenges for city states, spreading religion and generating the most.

Prophets are best, avoid the other two as a prophet has both unique abilities. Though once you break aesthetics you would spend religion on great people and fill your wonders and buildings with gear and fuel concert tours, targeted for a cultural victory.

  • About to experiment with a new tactic. I've built 3 shitty, expensive cities in the arctic and i'm about to give them to the Russians in the hope that the added financial burden cripples their empire. Be interesting to see if this works.
  • Oh tough decision. My caravel's just past the Dutch capital, which has come under heavy attack. It has no strength left whatsoever. I could easily nip in and take it. Just not sure if it's worthwhile as i don't have any happiness points going spare.
  • Things are not going well.

My usual strategy is fast and aggressive expansion, ensuring wide territory, then building up a big army and smashing everyone. Basically civ risk. Just hit the 1500s and only got 5 cities, no cash, my people are on the verge of unhappiness and I've been well and truly penned in by my neighbours . Gonna have to try a new strategy, no idea what though. Doing OK for culture so maybe that could give me some direction.

  • You need to pick a win condition and stick with it. If it's military then you've still got a chance, build an army and carefully choose when and who to strike.
  • I wasted almost 24 hours on my latest game. Quite annoyed with myself. Managed to get right up to 1940 before realising that London (my main science city, with the National College, Oxford University, and loads of great scientist tile improvements) had been mistakenly set to specialise in production for a couple thousand years.

Very frustrating. By the time i realised i had already sunk down to 5th or 6th place overall, and there's no hope of catching those in the lead now. Shifting London's focus back to science literally doubled my science output. I might well have won that game had i realised sooner.
  • Gonna go naval.

  • This game's horrible. I've spent most of the past two days playing it and I'm not even sure if I'm enjoying myself. I'm going back to it after I've done the washing up.
  • It's the most wonderful game in the world. Every time i start afresh it's only a short matter of time before i'm utterly sucked in. 'One more turn' doesn't do it justice. 'One more 24 hours stint', more like.

I don't know why you're not all playing on the world map setting. It's amazing. I'm really enjoying playing with a super-crammed Europe; none of the starting civs have any space to move, so it's a rush to colonise the rest of the world.
  • 'Cause we like the exploring/ not knowing the terrain bit. I don't see what a realistic map would add to anything.
