Day Z
  • Some more vids. These Aussie guys treat it like a real-life military operation:

  • Oh, daisy, I get it.
  • Anyone else wanna try and get a group together to play this later?
  • I should have time later, finally got my PC set up again. Do you have a mic?
  • Yeah, what time are you on? We'll organize chat via steam then. Might need to use skype or something if there are more than a couple of us.
  • I can do any time apart from between 6:30 and 7:30 tonight.

I used to use this Mumble server when playing League of Legends:

    Address: avid-gaming.com
    Port: 64738

Its usually pretty empty, I doubt they'll notice us using it.  Or I don't mind paying the 50p or whatever it is to rent one if there are a few of us.
  • Start around 7.30-8 then? Anyone else game?
  • Yeah, starting at 7:30 is fine for me.
  • Id love to join but cant make it tonight, however in future if anyone wants a ventrillo server i can host on my pc with no trouble as its always on
  • We have a Mumble server with the forum Minecraft one, you'll find the login details on that thread if you want to use it?

Easy enough to set up a different channel.
  • Yeah that would probably be useful if we ever get a few of us on this.

Played this for a few hours last night with vicinity_of_pie.  It is fucking hard to coordinate at night time in this game.  When we eventually found each other through the use of a flare it attracted some bandit guy who shot me in the back (I'm not 100% convinced that it wasn't pie tbh).

Switched to a day time server and things went better until Pie attracted a whole city worth of zombies to the building that I was in...

I'm up for another game at some point today if anyone is around.

This is pretty much what I'm worried about.  All these opportunities for emergent gameplay and setting up a little township, surviving etc, but in fact 90% of players will kill other players on sight.

Game needs a method of punishing those who just kill other humans willy nilly.  Surely in this situation for real, humans would be a valuable commodity?  If they nail a way to do that it'd be awesome.

After a certain amount of player kills a human will be given a bandit skin which easily identifies them.
I've played this quite a  lot over the last few dayz and have generally found most people helpful.  Or maybe I've just been lucky.

  • Ooh, that's actually a pretty good solution.  I guess it's natural that people will be a bit "video gamey" about it, but I'd love a solution where it was a bit more realistic.
  • If you're cynical you could say murdering people and stealing their stuff is somewhat realistic, in that situation (end of the world, 'the dead have risen' type affair). Although it's a situation that's inherently unrealistic, but still. I'm sure if you were mobbed up and came across someone who was obviously a sitting duck you'd be more likely to take advantage of your numerical supremacy. It's vaguely justified if you think of the stuff you can get to aid your own survival, more so than many games.

Obviously in real life actually killing someone would bring up a lot more guilt and not be taken as lightly as it is in a videogame. Crazy Norwegian loners aside.
  • Someone who's a sitting duck could be added to your group as an extra pair of hands, someone with skills your group doesn't already have, etc etc.  As you say, in real life, 99.99% of people wouldn't be able to just take a life.

And you'd be pretty gutted if you killed someone, rifled through their possessions for the tin of beans you saw them holding and found their ID identifying them as a doctor.

  • That'd be a great addition; give everyone an occupation so they get certain bonuses?  "No, don't shoot!  I only have beans, but I'm a mechanic/doctor/chef!"  Or you might end up starting a character who's a hairdresser and have no such luck.

"Hey look guys, another florist..." *BLAM* "Anyone for beans?"

Joking apart, it's a great idea.

Edit: And you could be sporting the apropriate skin based on your occupation so that potential allies could assess your "value". And it would mean that some people would be running around in chef whites.

  • Don't you need another player to administer a blood-transfusion? So it does encourage a certain amount of co-operation. Obviously you can play it various way, helping out everyone you meet (and risking the occasional shooting) or taking down everyone you come up against on the grounds they might do it to you given half a chance, or judging each individual encounter on it's merit (risk, reward etc).

I wasn't advocating real-life murder there, by the way.

I was just saying I can understand it in-game, in this situation. But then I'm sure some people don't consider a moral dimension to their actions and it's just 'lol, headshot'.

All the more reason to get in early I think.  That element will swarm over it once it really hits the headlines.

I did stumble upon a group of 3 people watching the only entrance to a garage.  There was a bandit in there and they were administering a bit of vigilante justice.
The game does foster a cooperative feeling.  I spent about an hour escorting a player to a town because he kept fainting every 2 minutes due to lack of blood and I was providing an overwatch while he came round.  There was a great feeling of satisfaction when we got to the town and he was able to get blood, even though I got nothing out of it.

Hmmm, it seems the latest patch (1.60) has just got rid of the bandit skin.  On the plus side you can now have female characters.

Hey, wasn't I the one who sacrificed my life when about 15 zombies were chasing us (i.e. I tried to confuse them by running around buildings and Nexx legged it so I would take the fall).

At least we learned never to shoot in Chernogorsk when we tried to meet up there.

I'll probably be up for playing more of this again later as well.

I think I better play this.  It seems to have everything I look for in a game of this type.
