Windows 8
  • Nope. Win 8 developers preview ran ok under the bootcamp for 7 though. And the installer seems to be working ok for others.

Are you running from a disc/USB or relying on the HDD based installer?

Whichever one you are using try swapping to the other, if you haven't already.
  • Just tried a USB install. It only got to 11% that time.

Ah well. I'll leave it a few days and have another poke around the internet to see if any other people are getting the same thing. There's no massive hurry to get it installed.

Just taken the plunge and put it on my main PC.

The graffix look much nicer on a decent screen. Gutted that Pinball FX isn't pulling in my bought tables for free. But much to expect I suppose.

I was mighty impressed by the fact that upon opening Music it listed all of my songs from the other PC and let me play them. That's all songs, not just Zune pass stuff. MP3s and Zune Pass stuff.

The PC in the kitchen with all the files on isn't switched on, so there must be some form of cloud matching thing happening, which I didn't think was switched on yet.

Oh, and IE now has an inline text auto correct and spellchecker. Thank fucking god. At last.

(and it knows fucking is a word)

The only thing that's impressed me is the graph data on moving and copying files.

Not impressed in the variations between desktop and metro. Worth watching latest BBC click for more on this.

BBC -we love Apple more than life itself and dumb shit down to the point Maggie Philbin would blush- Click? You're all right ; )

I've been using it since the start of the year so I'm used to flipping round between views/open apps/charms etc using a mouse and keyboad. It doesn't take too long for it to become natural.

Loving having previously browser based interfaces like Netflix come up as apps instead.

Modlol, if you watch the piece you'll see there's no bias. They're showing how the implementation between flipping what you're working with to the desktop shows peculiar functionality decisions in how it's been implemented.

I may be a C# and Enterprise Software performance and automation evangelist but for a web guy you don't half make the waxy MS shaft really greasy.

  • I saw that Click. There were quite even handed I thought. One thing they brought up though that does seem a bit rubbish is that Internet Explorer has two separate distinct versions, the open tabs, history and all the rest of it, don't sync between the two.

    That seems pretty rubbish.

I'm not gonna watch Click because it's for children and OAPs, bias or not.

There are some peculiarities, but then I doubt I'd share the same ones as Click do given peculiarities are a pretty personal thing.

I'm not sure about your last bit, I'm a web guy insofar as I use the right tool for the job. Web development is just one small bit of what I've spent the last 15 years doing. Thick headed morons who refuse to accept their specialist subject isn't the universal solution to any and all situations are the ones causing the problems. Web is great for the right problem but it's not 1998 anymore.
  • Also I went through to some online MS tech support live chat thing earlier. I said I was trying to install on a bootcamp partition and they were still trying to help me sort it out. I was a bit worried they'd say something shit like "We don't support that at this time".

Anyway they're going to do a remote connect to my PC at some point when I can spare the time to boot into it and let them do their shit. Reasonably impressed with what I assumed would be a diabolical service.

It is mind-numbingly generalist most of the time. It brings up the odd interesting tit bit from time to time though.

If Click wasn't aimed at children and OAPs they might have gone into sandboxing and integrity levels and explained why sharing across desktop apps and Metro apps wasn't possible. Hey, they might have even explained why there has to be two different versions (plugins, sandboxing) in the first place. But it isn't aimed at anyone that would understand that so I'm assuming they didn't.

I hate Click. It's managed to make me feel dumber for watching it every time I have.
  • Err you think anyone who doesn't know or care what sandboxing is or about integrity levels must be a child or an OAP?

Fortunately I don't use IE because it's still for people who don't know any better. However the issue spans across outlook and a few others, including third party apps which I've found infuriating.

Consistently 10% of click is worth watching, especially if your bread and butter is in the trade. Failure to to see any value in a regular hardware and software show is pretty woeful.

Modlol, now comes across as if he watched the piece. On a high level perspective they did explain that, essentially not to bamboozle the 99% and keep the programme flexible.

Yes...but it's not the default view, and you can't boot into it automatically.

Are you sure about this? You can create a custom start menu type thing, but no real "classic mode". There were a couple of hacks to reveal the classic mode in some of the early releases, but I think these were pulled.

If there was a classic mode, I would go for it as is very slick running OS. And I like the file transfer thingy as someone else has mentioned.

Aye there was a registry key you could change in preview versions but I can't find it in this. It would do away with metro and restore the start lozenge.

    Googling doesn't help.

The may well be a way to go direct to desktop, which keeps metro active but I've not tried to find it.

Nice switchero, but what I actually said was that because it's aimed at children and OAPs they wouldn't cover it.

You should try flipping your calendar into this century. IE has become an excellent browser.  You don't even need to hand your browsing habits over to the worlds largest ad seller who were fined for bypassing browser settings to sell them to get the most out of it either.

I'm sure 10% of Click! is interesting. Unfortunately that doesn't make up the 90% that would be much better spent doing some actual reading. Or staring out of the window. If Click! did cover the technical reasons for the restrictions then I stand corrected. I might watch it later to see if they did.

For anyone that's interested, here's a discussion of the unseen improvements in Win8. If you're not that bothered, and why would most people be, Click! is available on the BBC News channel whenever they've got some time to fill

The options it gives are: update now, or save to desktop and update later.

Think there might have been a third but I forget now.
  • Exciting Installation Update:
Still no joy. Last night an "AnswerTech" (some sort of online MS assistant person) remote connected to Windows 7 on my laptop. I let him get on with it. He uninstalled some MS Security Essentials (which I'd only re-installed after attempting to upgrade but never mind) and tried again. Sure enough it failed at 30%. He then had another go, killing some background processes, and some other configuration stuff that I couldn't really keep up with.
    Failed at 30% again.

My status has now been upgraded to 'B'. I can expect to be contacted by the escalation team within 24-48 hours.
    Wooooooh!

Actually the service is ok so far. Obviously this is the first step to clear out the simple issues that cause 90% of the problems. If I had to guess I'd say it may be something to do with the conflict between what Windows wants to do and the amount of access that Apple allows to the hardware. Which is only going to be fixed by Apple or MS by a patch or something.

I'll probably have to do a straight install from a Win 8 boot disk. I'll either start trying to demand this from MS if their resolution process fails, or just see if I can pay the difference.

I use Max for playing with WiiMotes and windows. All my WiiMotes are here in uni and I don't have a win8 machine. Max might look complicated but you can assign the controllers and accelerometers to whaterver you want anything you want.

Worth having a play with if you like that sort of thing. Oh you'll need some infrared or tea lights. And bluetooth.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Max_(software)

There's probably an more direct way of doing what you want but Max is generally more fun. Virtual drumkits have been a fave for example.

A wireless mouse/keyboard combo is probably your best bet right now. Unless anyone else has any other suggestions. The Xbox is their under the TV solution.
