Hurrah! We've not had a dud yet! Tell me that crust isn't amaze. I'm definitely in the bread flour and a good dark crust camp, but all of them look great. Change your culinary life so it will.
Me and the boy ate nearly the whole thing this afternoon sitting on the floor. I had cheese and he had butter. Didn't even speak for a ten minute spell, just sat and stuffed our faces.
Do it. Material costs are about 23p a loaf, takes very little effort (but a small amount of worry), makes your place smell amazing, tastes seriously good, best crust you will ever eat.
I forgot to take a pic of my olive one. It was amazing. Making another this weekend so will post pics. I just mixed a bunch of whole olives into the dough mixture and proceeded as normal. Lovely.
I was quite impressed with how good the loaf was I made yesterday, even though I only left it for 15 mins after tipping. I'm going to try olives with strong flour and slightly less water.
Think I made a boo boo on the one that's proving now.
First time I mixed all the dry ingredients before adding the cup and a half of water, last night late and quite stoned I just plonked it all in - which I think made all the yeast stick together and stay in one spot.
I seem to remember doing that and it ended badly, although I later realized it would have been the perfect time to try the knead no-knead bread. Would definitely require a doubling in size for the second rise though (as per traditional loaf), which may or may not happen.
Goddam the no knead bread makes good crostini. Sliced it thin and ate with freshly made Chef John cream cheese. I feel slightly sick, and the cheese got eaten in less than ten mins, but it was worth it. I might take up bulimia for sheer greed purposes.
Turns out that a pot of Ambrosia flavoured custard and two crushed digestives is a reasonable imitation of those Hot ________ Crunch desserts that Bird's used to make.
Made pizzas today, and realised that I had made double the dough needed so decided to experiment and made a garlic and rosemary loaf with the excess. Its surprisingly delicious.
