If I was a billionaire you’re damn right I’d have a secret volcano base with jet ski’s, henchmen and an underground hanger.

    Yes, once.
  • Me and the kids say that to each other every time we come back in and take off our shoes.

  • What else does MGM have that'd be good? It's not a studio where I can picture anything off the top of my head.
  • They have the lion at the start.  That’s something to be monetised a bit more I reckon.
  • Genuinely think a Stargate reboot would be quite popular.
  • They also have The Hobbit but I dont know what level of rights they own.
Rocky/Creed. I wouldnt put it past a streaming service to do a Rocky series.
  • Rocky 9 starring Bezos himself, cheering a low paid delivery driver up the philly steps carrying a grand piano.

    The good work here.
  • Their TV dept have Handmaid’s Tale.

So this is something that came up a while ago when all the stuff about Amazon Games studio closures came up, and the clusterfuck it was revealed to be - namely, that Bezos and the upper management at Amazon genuinely don't believe in industry specialisation. To them, they're smart enough to be able to pivot (*gag*) into any field or industry and be a huge success because, as Bezos puts it, it "should not be that hard".

They're super-amazing braniac billionaires, how could they fail to run a set of game studios? How could they fail to run a media empire? They have money and they're really, really smart. Like, so smart.

They believe that a great leader can lead anything, that's what makes a great leader. So, of course they think that a new studio's first game should be a HUGE hit. Of course they will take over the industry. Because if they fail it means they're not geniuses.

    Disclaimer:

Amazon cancelled their first big game less than 2 weeks after it launched.

Stallone himself actually mentioned his plans for a Rocky TV series recently. Rocky at the age of around 17, getting into boxing and the origins of him becoming an enforcer for the local criminal outfit. Could be good.

Pretty much. Half an hour shorter and I probably could've gone along with the daftness of it more.

Essentially cut the first half hour of the front and your laughing..

    The rest is good.

I'm not sure the ending made much sense though.

Also what the fuck happened to the woman that daughter went out of her way to rescue, did she just vanish? Such a shitty, badly made film.

    I'm pretty sure that...

  • So being a glutton for punishment I've started watching the Army of the Dead thing.
I actually quite liked Snyder's Justice League. It was way too long, obviously, but it was solid.
I'm only like halfway into this thing and it is abysmal. If I didn't know better I'd say this was somebody's first film, and somebody who seems to not have any understanding of visual film language or storytelling. It's phenomenally ugly too. All those handheld close-ups which extremely shallow focus which mean you have no idea about the make up of a space or how people are in that space. It just makes everything so disconnected.
Such a wasted opportunity because the concept is a fun one.
Ah well, better writers than me have written more so I'll leave it there.

I too watched Army of the Dead, and was unimpressed.

I was going to say that in a parallel universe Snyder is probably an amazing second unit director, and then I realised that the bits of the film that made me think that were probably actually directed by his Second Unit Director, and not him at all.

The most convincing relationships in the film are between a man and a safe, and a woman and a helicopter - so unconvincing are the human interactions.  (It says a lot that they were able to film the entirety of Tig Notaro's part on green screen without the rest of the cast, and be confident that she wouldn't seem any less engaged with the rest of the characters than anyone else.)

Still, I think I'm alone in not even liking the opening credits that much. Yes, they were efficient at setting up the back story, but even that went on too long - even going so far as to use a really shitty cover of Viva Las Vegas. (They have Elvis songs elsewhere in the movie, so they can obviously afford them - just use Elvis you idiots.) In fact that cover probably doubles as a review for the film itself.  The core idea is fun, and in theory it hits the rights beats, but in reality it's a joyless, drawn out slog riding the coattails of better things that came before.

Although I must defend the opening credits song because it's Richard Cheese and he is a treasure. Doesn't suit that sequence but I think that's more the visuals fault than the song's.
  • Im not as harsh on Army as you guys. At least I wasnt. Until these scenes:

I think I'd rather cut a little out of each scene until it created better pacing. Although really it's probably less an editing job and more a need for tighter writing and plotting throughout in the first place.
  • Maybe. I wasn't really paying attention for the first bit. To be fair it's a problem with a lot of films in my opinion.. it's like when we went from the LP to the CD. Used to be 45 minutes run time and if you where on an amazing hot streak you might get a double album but it was the exception not the rule. Suddenly a CD is 80 minutes and everyones like... let's fill the fucker up.

Most films should be around 90  minutes to two hours max.. fuck this 2.30 run time in general.

Before the movie landed on the streaming service, Snyder addressed the purpose of the robots during a Q&A for Netflix's press notes (via Comicbook). Synder said that the backstory of the zombie robots would be explained in an upcoming TV series.

    Well there you go.
  • Hang on... Zombie robots?! I watched this film and don't recall those at all

  • The glowing-blue-eyed ones, Wookie. By that point I'd given up on the film making any kind of sense.
