Retro Gaming
  • For me it’s the NARC box giving me the nostalgia chills. Loved that game so so much on the Amiga.
That was awkward and unsettling, never post anything like it again.
  • Haven't the foggiest where that came from. I never owned whatever machine it's on.
  • £1 the lot best I can do

The piles of Dreamcast and Saturn not doing it for you?? I have threatened elsewhere that I'd love to start a Game Gear collection. Might be the next step.
  • Can't knock the SAT/DC stuff but older Sega gets me fuzzier. MS especially.

Aware the MD section needs expanded beyond the 3 Sonic games. Have the SoR series on my list for my 40th birthday wishlist in August.

I've just put some bids in on some mega drive games. I mean this in the best possible way, it's great that they're not worth a lot because I might get 7-8 more in over he next week for like £20 all in.

Area 88 and Super Metroid are my two favourite in terms of box art, followed by Mario World. They really are striking with the vertical work.

Would like Mario World, F-Zero and Pilotwings.

I have SMK, Pop n Twinbee and Mario All Stars.    I also have all (4) of the SFC Super Tetris/Bombliss games complete.   Caravan Shooting Collection is a 3 game compilation of Hudson NES shmups.

Collection corner for context. Pretty sure I've shown this before but it's been rearranged and pruned a few times.  Switch shmup collection sitting to the side.

  • In about 6 weeks I'm gaining access to mine and my brother's old childhood bedrooms. Lots of stuff left behind because we moved out in a hurry. Unknown what's left after three decades but apparently there's still loads of stuff left in the cupboards. Very much hoping there's a Master System in there somewhere.

An in-depth look at the MOS 6502 processor.

He’s not kidding when he said it powered a generation. Was in everything from the SNES to Furbies, and is still used in pace makers.

I'm a 6502 man myself. Taught myself assembler on the Oric-1 which was a 6502 machine.  Of course the 2600 runs on a processor very similar - it's a cut back 6502.  There's one in my asteroids cabinet.

The Guardian's review of the Atari 400 mini.
And while they are undoubtedly ancient, many of these titles – including Boulder Dash and Lee (originally entitled Bruce Lee, but I’m guessing the licence expired) – hold up as genuinely playable relics. [...] Plus, in typical mini console style, there’s a rewind function to correct mistakes and you can save games to memory. It’s also possible to tweak the visual settings, opting for a CRT effect which mimics the display style of traditional TVs, and there’s a virtual keyboard if you play a game that needs further input options. [...]

Interestingly, one of the selling points of the 400 Mini is that it lets you “load your own programs” [...] I tested this aspect running several games, and it’s an impressively smooth process: the emulator will accept files in a number of common formats and will play both Atari 400 and 800 titles as well as later XL/XE variations. When you insert a USB stick containing game ROMs, a thumb drive icon appears on the onscreen game list, and when you click on it, your added games are displayed.

As the author of that piece states, the Atari 400/800 were the zenith to me. They even had a cart slot for some of the games. 4 controller ports too.

This mini would tempt me, as would the PC engine.

Archer Maclean (RIP) originally coded Dropzone for the Atari 8bit. Glorious game - one of the reasons I twitch re offloading the NES and games.  NES got a superb port of Boulderdash as well.

I am tempted, assuming I can find a wireless controller that works. I bet there's some magic homebrew out there.

In other news, via their Discord, Blaze's roadmap for the Evercade 'family of systems' (to borrow a phrase from Nintendo) has not one but four hardware releases in 2024. Odds on it's two pieces of hardware with different colour ways, but still. Wonder what they are. My money is on two new colours for the Super Pocket, and maybe an updated VS, with aesthetics to match the new EXP rather than the OG Evercade.

Took delivery of a physical game yesterday. First in a long time. Arnold Palmer Tournament Golf for the Megadrive in splendid condition.

This is a pure nostalgia thing. Have had this on a buy list for ages.

My mate had an MD in the day and this game was booted up for hangover Sunday play. I remember 4 of us playing 2 vs 2 match play. It was perfect for that sort of occasion.

It's still a solid 16bit presentation. Nice arcade look and a pleasingly solid feel to it. It has a campaign/tournament mode with RPG-lite features like upgradable clubs and caddies - but we usually just played the versus mode.
