Ive played my hour trial. Seems fun if a little impenetrable at first. Made a fire to try and warm up but it seemed to have no effect. Some guy came over to stand by my fire. The fire went out and he knocked me out and stole all my stuff. I woke up, ate some berries and attacked him while he was warming himself by my fire. Knocked him out, took my stuff back and then beat him to death. Stumbled across a bunch of American dude Bros chatting by a fire. I hid in a bush listening to them talk crap about taking a crap and eating it (in game). I scurried off to collect some resources, made a club and was just on my way to return to the to attack them when my hour ran out.
*Eats berries because theres literally nothing else around. Not even trees for wood (which i only know how to get through watching videos prior to playing*
Aye, got myself up and running last night with a little hut and provisions but it was more practice than anything. I'll wait for Sparkles and Magick to get on before starting anything permanent.
There's a lovely atmosphere to it. I really felt like I was fighting for survival for the first hour until I had a little camp sorted.
A nice suprise was a guy from the hut down the beach from me heading over and giving me a bunch of fiber to help build my hut. A few other wandered past and nobody stopped to attack or anything. I guess everyone is a bit cagey at first.
Bah! Seems that the Steam sale isn't starting till the 22nd after all and not today. If it crops up cheep again then I'll certainly jump in Ace. Have no idea if a private PC server is needed/better/worse?
It does sound a bit as if the game is slanted towards the random crap that comes from prowling gangs of Brofist Yanks/Krazy Ivans/Cultured and Well Mannered Europeans/Insert racial slur here and going out to try to destroy them/extend the international hand of peace etc etc
Every server was 69/70 players when I played last night so we might struggle to get on together for a few days. They're putting more servers on every day.
This is fucking excellent. Died twice already, can't find a way to respawn anywhere I've been though, I thought a camp fire might do the trick but no.
I've killed trilobites, those spitting things off of Jurassic Park and one big dino that was only a level 6. The problem being it was a flighty fucker, taking me off the beach and into the jungle where a bunch of compys and fucking huge mozzies made short work of me.
I've seem some awesome triceratops and brontosaurus knocking about, the way the ground shakes when they're near is brilliant.
Very much living hand to mouth at the moment, foraging for berries as I explore and cooking up some meat at my fire has seen me keep hunger at bay. Loving the temperature control too, go for a swim at night and you're freezing but sit by a fire for a while and you're fine. I was also getting too hot at my jungle fire, and that's without any clobber on.
What's the score with thirst? It's not been an issue yet, can you drink straight from a river? I've not found a spring or anything.
I absolutely adore this, I think it's time to start work on a shelter and some garb.
Dont get too far i fancy starting a place together.
Nah, I've a feeling I won't get that far!
I like the idea of starting over anyway, being vulnerable is the best bit. It's interesting that the spawn points are labeled easy, medium and hard, I started on easy and managed to muddle along due to the lack of predators about. I'm guessing a hard spawn is a nightmare, just let me punch this tree in peace Mr Rex.
With a few you could split jobs. One person get the hut built while the others forage and hunt.
I notice u can put apin code on campfires, presumably so friends can use your fire. I wonder if when youre in a tribe everything is shared automatically anyway.
Dinosaurs
Dinos have levels, but they don't seem to matter too much, if it looks like you should be able to take it on single handed then you probably can. Level 23 Dodo when you're level 2? No problem. Level 2 Triceratops when you're level 6? Fuck no. I've haven't tried attacking a Bronto yet because it just seems folly.
Camp
Set up camp near to water, trees and bushes. Sounds obvious but without these you're fighting a losing battle. You need to set up a sleeping bag as a single use spawn point should you die, to do that you need to build a floor platform first then place it on that. You can research a better bed that lasts more than one death (I think, haven't haven't died to test it yet). Remember to extinguish your camp fire when not using it or you'll use up your fuel while tutting about elsewhere. Research a storage box ASAP as you can store shit you don't need on you all the time to keep your weight down. You should also stock it with spare gear in case you snuff it.
Crafting
Different tools seem to get different drops. So for trees, the pick gets thatch while the axe gets wood. For animal carcasses, the pick gets meat and the axe gets hide, go with the axe as the hide is more valuable for crafting, and you'll still get a few meat off it. Can't seem to do anything with the shells dotted about everywhere.
Food
Foraging for berries is actually quite decent as far as food goes, with the added bonus of collecting fibre to make some trendy clothes. For meat, cook it at a camp fire as soon as possible, it goes off pretty quickly. Took me a while to pluck up enough courage to take the plunge, but the sea is jam packed with fish which offer up easy meat.
Strange Beams of Light
These seem to be Hunger Games style cache drops, you can get some decent gear to give you a leg up but some are level locked.
Spoilered in case you want to find that stuff out for yourself.
Oh, and if you're transferring stuff between inventories, hold the A button on the item to switch it, makes things much less of a faff. Also, don't forget to pull your clothes off your corpse like I did.
