Far Cry 3's on 360/PS3, DJR; is the cut off "was available on last gen consoles" or "must have been released before the XB1?" Pretty sure FC3 is in regardless.

I think it's a joke that has come over here from the GOTY thread.

Don't we already jave this thread? Though I'm sure I got told off for mentioning a pc game so maybe this is broader. Think reg started it.
Think It was the curios thread I was thinking of in fact

There is another GOTG thread, started by ERE. But it wasn't a top 10 collate-athon like this. Games Index dude. Check games index thread!

  • Someone post a list of their best DS and PSP games so I can make a list of what to play before all this ends and the world explodes. Top of the list is probably DQIX. Not sure if there is anything else that may have a chance of getting into GOTG for me, but I'd like to see what I'm missing.

  • OP updated to list the formats allowed, having taken into account forumites' suggestions.

I'll update game list later, might try sectioning into formats.

  • What's this shit about no Vita or 3DS games?
  • What's this F1 scoring silliness?
  • The 3DS bit i sort of get, but the Vita has been out a couple of years now, and one of its main draws was the cross-compatibility with the PS3. Buy a game on the PS3, play it on the Vita and vice-versa.

Not sure there's a single exclusive that'd make it into my top 10 anyway, but can't see why it'd be excluded.

Console generations are set by time frame not power.

If power was the set point then Wii would be in the PS2 era.

I've decided I will be using the 'ignore' feature on anyone who puts journey in their top 10
  • I wonder if anyone will realise that I automatically ignore Journey haters.

Ah, so I just get a blank post
  • Damn, I forgot about Proteus and Dear Esther, need to put them in my top 10. And can't be bothered to play rubbish like Dark Souls anymore.

Currently trying to play Gone Home on a 0% charged MacBook. Didn't work. Will have to twiddle thumbs and post here until Mac charges.

And the Vita's been out for 2 years already, hardly next-gen is it?

For video game handhelds, the generation began in February 2011 with the release of the Nintendo 3DS, successor to the Nintendo DS, in Japan, followed by a North American and European release in March. The successor of the PlayStation Portable, the PlayStation Vita, was released in December 2011 in Japan, and Western markets in February 2012.

Meh, it was designed to function alongside the PS3 and is therefore current gen - fuck wikipedia. Anyway, like I said, don't think I'll be picking any Vita exclusives in my top 10.
  • Aye, its current Gen, along with the 3ds, Wii U, PS4 and Bone.

By the way, I'm fine for mobile games to be allowed. It's just that I've never played one that would get remotely near a list like this. I can see how point and clicks would work like, but anything else is constrained by the shitty interface.

  • Without specialist knowledge? Perish the thought.
  • Tearaway has potential though to garner some points. Right? I'm enjoying it.

You do need to open your mind a bit here. As I stated earlier, the interface for PvZ is far better on a touch device than it is on a laptop (I haven't played a console version but can't see how a joypad would be better), the constant sun collection is tedious as fuck with a mouse. Then there are games built specifically for touch screen which work beautifully with it (Papa Sangre, Device 6) and others which gain tremendously from the added layer of intimacy provided by a personal screen. I can't imagine TWD being quite as affecting for me if I was playing with a joypad on a screen which I share with others rather than one which I always had with me and which allowed me to continue the story in bed.

  • There are some great phablet exclusives, I agree. Hence I've included them. Super Hexagon comes to mind. The Simogo games too. Dodonpachi Maximum is just as good as home console shmups and is very well suited to phablet gaming.

SH is now available on PC, too.
  • I'm sure come June I will disagree with myself but I think I will go for the following:

    1. Batman Arkham City (360)
Super Polished, great story and characters, lots of collecting that required a little skill as well - this is how I like my open world adventures. Throw in an incredible addictive score attack mode in the combat rooms and pretty decent DLC. So good, I have completed it 3 times. (leaving out Asylum from my list because is quite similar to this)

    2. Super Street Fighter 4 (ps3)
Obviously Arcade Edition is the latest version but it was the super edition that really drew me into this game and forced me to get an arcade stick. Slickly done and wonderfully colourful, its been rebirthed now that my 7 year old nephew has started playing. I think I'll still be playing some form of SF2 in 20 years.

    3. Guitar Hero 3 (360 / ps3)
Activision overkilled the music genre pretty quickly, but I still fire this up for a quick blast. Appealing to both newcomers and experts, its a toss up between this and GH2 but I'll take the third version simply because I played it more thanks to it being on both consoles.

    4. Call of Duty - Black Ops (ps3)
I remember liking COD4:MW more but the facts remain that this was the version of COD that I played the most, prestiging several times and becoming pretty damn good at. With that in mind, Its only fair to have it in this list.

    5. Geometry Wars 2:Retro Evolved (360)
In truth, this was the real reason I got a 360. It came with the machine and while Gears was fun, it was GW2 that I kept uploading in those first few weeks. Liked it so much I dispensed with the disc version and bought the download so I could load it up whenever I wished.

    6. Red Dead Redemption (ps3)
Absolute proof that atmosphere in games has become vital. RDR has good mechanics to its gameplay but it would have become boring long before the revenge mission if it didnt have such a fantastic world to inhabit. I'd be happy to just wander the game world and admire the nature (much like far cry 3)

    7. X-com: Enemy Within (ps3)
Havent played the update  but that doesnt stop the original being absolute great fun - building up a squad hasnt been this much fun since Football manager. Non-bloody, sweary design also worth a mention, this is a game that enjoys its b-movie flavour.

    8. Braid (360)
Bit of a tricky choice this one. Unlike the other games on my list, Braid has no replay value to me at all but it scored hghly for me at the time because it was a great mind bender and the end was a twist I didnt see coming. Wonderful game mechanics as well, the only thing I disliked about it was the look of it.

    9. Gears of War (360)
The first version is still the grittiest best for me and I got massive fun from both its single and online multiplayer modes. While later versions added some great touches, its the almost purity of the first game that still gets me - and the story hadnt yet over-egged itself. The tension in multiplayer when it came down to you against another (or better yet - another 2 enemies) cant be over sold.

    10. Wii Sports (wii)
No, its not the best thing ever but it sold videogames to so many people and lets face it, there is nothing better than seeing people who previously hated videogames crack under the charms of bowling and golf.

As I said, I am sure my opinion will change come June (only started the last of us for example) but I'm pretty happy with that top ten.
