Minari is on my watch list. A 5 doesn’t sound good and I usually trust Shabby’s judgment. I’m still going to watch it.

You'll probably like it, there's enough there I think for it to be enjoyable but not anything that will stick with you.

    Plus this from last page:
It seems I have upset everyone!

Do yourselves a favour and try and rewatch Sword in the Stone. It ain't great. There's really no plot at all which just makes it draaaaaag. I don't understand how there didn't have him get the sword and then have the vignettes be about him learning to be a good king. That's a story. A wizard turning a boy into animals for no reason is not.
Now Robin Hood, that's a classic. It has an actual story too.

Minari made me think of Paterson and how Paterson showed you could tell a nice simple story without it resorting to the tropes. It was just too obvious in how it set itself up I think and just didn't really make use of the characters and setting that it had. I thought that kind of film had been done better and that affected my enjoyment.

Top stuff, as always. Do you like Japanese cinema at all? A bit of Kore-eda? Nobody Knows and Like Father, Like Son absolutely slay me.

Argo and The Town.  Ben Affleck can be relied upon to turn out solid 3.5☆ movies.  Shame he never got to do his Batman.
His movies would be even better if he stopped casting himself in the lead role.
  • 24. Safe
Statham kicks, punches and shoots his way through Russians, Chinese and the cops to save a kid in this brain dead action flick. It's not bad, just very average. 6

    25. Zack Snyder's Justice League
Much, much better than the original, I enjoyed this far more than I thought I would. It's too long and is essentially 2 films (or a single 3 hour one) but as a JL fanboy I loved it. 8

Deranged Australian zombie comedy in which a man-child sad sack 'musician', a kindergarten teacher and an unhinged children's entertainer have to protect a class of 5yo kids when they find themselves in the midst of an undead outbreak at a petting zoo. Highly inappropriate, shitloads of swearing, gallons of gore, very funny and really entertaining - plus Lupita Nyong'o looking absolutely stunning. Loved it. 9.

I do like Japanese cinema, but will admit I've not particularly explored it in depth, and have mainly seen what might be described as "the obvious stuff".  I'm particularly embarrassed to admit I've not actually seen any of Kore-eda's work.  (Not even Shoplifters.)  I keep meaning to rectify that, so I'll see what I can track down!

The Lincoln Lawyer us a by-the-numbers defence lawyer flick that's like a high tier TV movie but is made watchable by Matthew McConaughey in the lead. William H Macy and Bryan Cranston are in support which helps it along too. Kills 2 hrs.

Once Were Warriors (1994). Maori n the hood. 5/10

Scarlet Street (1945). Good noir-ish story with interesting flawed characters and a twisty plot.  Seems like it ought to be more well known.  Has a weird companion movie in 'Woman In The Window' (1944) which shares a bunch of cast and plot points.  8/10

It's powerful stuff thematically.  I just thought the execution was nothing special.
  • Fair enough. There's a lesser-known sequel, but it's not all that apparently.

re JP cinema I've only watched the obvious big hitters, Seven Samurai, Hidden Fortress, Rashomon from Kurosawa - and even then there's gaps in his output I have yet to see. Original Godzilla is a splendid film and quite a stark watch - esp. the post monster attack scenes which hammer home the nuclear attack analogy. Also watched Ozu's Tokyo Story which is beguiling and rewards repeated viewing.

  • +1 for Once Were Warriors. Rewatched recently, still as powerful as ever. The recent Second Sight blu has a great reunion doc made by the eldest son.

Had the same the other night. CUNTS! It's a Google thing apparently. I opted to give them a scan of my divers license instead as it's pretty benign information, but I'll be fucked if they're getting credit card details off me.

    27. Ava John Wick meets Nikita with an ex-alcoholic hitwoman going back home while killing the odd mark. Not as big budget or a good as some of the other assassin films but enjoyable but it gets 2 extra points just because Chastain is in it, yes I’m in love.

Hmm. Hmmmm. Kinda annoying, as it was reasonably well acted, some nice effects, but the story was just like a nope. The premise, interesting. But that sure at the end?!?!? Please.

It’s grown on me after a few watches. But I’m nowhere near to the point that I’m gonna cry about that silly scene that people on B&B seem to love. But it has Chastain in so +2 points.
