Society's Ills - A study in the perceived inequalities between the "haves" and the "have nots"
  • FYI, by their own admission France is bust.

Socialist tax and spend doesn't work.
  • It can if they tax the right bloc diligently enough... in a context where the capital can't flee. Erk.

All I'm reading is people bitching and moaning. I've read no situation here where people couldn't achieve what they want. Including Moto (reads that you chose the wrong company to work for).
I live in North Devon, do you know how limited my opportunities are compared with people that live else where? I do because I've worked in those other places and like I said I missed my first daughter growing up so working that sort of job isn't an option.

I was actually doing a job I enjoyed when I got headhunted for here. I worked for myself but times got hard (I could have got have got lucky and landed a big contract but I didn't and no amount of hard work would have guaranteed that it would have happened any differently) so I became a postie. I thoroughly enjoyed that job and would have stayed in it until retirement but I was offered this job that was double the pay. I had been warned that my boss was a cunt to work for but I had always got on with him and they had approached me afterall. It turns out I was wrong and others were right so I am now stuck here, my old Royal Mail manager has said I could go back but I can't afford to.

Here's another one for you, my nephew is a cracking mechanic (he's 19 and works at a local quad bike place), if I had a small windfall and could buy him all the tools, a unit and a ramp I would. He would do well, this would be down to luck, but he can't change anything because he is on minimum wage and cannot afford to save the moeny to do it on his own because most of his wages go on his car insurance.

I wouldn't want to see anything bad happen to you but if your job ended I'd like to see how you'd cope using your own advice.
  • Oh mk, you are sometimes mad as a barrel of squirrels. In this case you are letting your personal beliefs (based on the social groups you hang around in) drive your opinion.

There are more millionaires? In the UK, yes there are, in the last two years the number of net millionaires has increased 7.9% (however, I'm pretty sure those numbers have been bolstered by the nice little houses these people own on very low mortgage rates). A rise of 22,000 ish.
At the same time though, over 200,000 children have been pushed under the 'poverty' line due to cuts in working tax credits and other benefits.
  • Gonz I worry that the all-the-cool-shit-is-here argument for inertia wouldn't take long to be undermined by the transfer of those abroad too. It's already documented that much of the jetting that the megarich do is between the same hotels and conferences, seeing the same people. All corps can be more mobile than they once were, client corps for hospitality very much so.
  • Fingers crossed for hyperinflation, you'll all be millionaires!
  • @mk A lot of poor people in other countries have a very reduced life expectancy too
  • Infant mortality rates.
  • Yoss' prob is that he can't live where he wants to. Did-fucking-dums.
  • How's Scandinavia doing nowadays? Probably a better model than France if you want to go that route.
  • Depending on his industry, he might have to live in London before he can be employed to stay there. Britain has some urban hubs that function and could function better, and many that don't and probably shouldn't be funded as if they might.

  • Viewing the world through the polarising bubble of stupidity certainly simplifies complexity.
  • Problem then is how you look after the people left behind, which I wouldn't expect an intelligent series of policies on to emerge soon.
  • Moto I lost my job in December and now I'm changing industry to finance (hopefully). If I get the job I will have to move to Moscow (without my wife and daughter for now). I will take the job though because it could set me up for life. It could o fucking pear shaped and I've not even got the job. If you live somewhere with no opportunities (I know Barnstaple well) then I would move to a city.
He could've just said they came from another planet but seems keen to convince people with his bullshit pseudoscience that he knows stuff. I wouldn't trust him with my lunch. - SG
  • A combination of a financial windfall, and parents with savings meant that I could go to a crammer in London, where they quite simply taught me how to get an A.  As a result, I got the grades I needed, and off I went to medical school.

Somehow, the most depressing sentences of the thread.

I read an interesting thing aboot Economics lately where it was argued that unlike medicine or an older science it was full of words and terms and phrases that raised the bar of entry simply to force the jobs into a fenced off area where a degree and understanding of that vocab was needed thus it allowed them to raise wages in line with a self-imposed gap, which I guess I always knew but yeah, words.

My anecdote: best friend of my gf is a poor lass from ilkeston from a split home who did shit at college, went on an access course (the one i'm one) became the only person to have got into Notts Uni Theology course from an access, and is now rearing her child and planning to study medicine as she has passed her GAMSAT in the 80th percentile. A self made woman! (incorrect, her intelligence is hers, but luckily finding a partner with a financial situation that lets her choose to work if and when she pleases has been instrumental (she does currently volunteer))

    Thanks for qualifying that.

But just because it's quotable, doesn't make it right.
