Should I give Mario Sunshine a second go? It just really annoyed me first time which was very disappointing after M64.

Probably not. It's a fine game in its own right but I'm not gutted I threw the towel in 60% of the way through. If the answer to the question 'do you want to play the weakest 3D Mario (which is far better than the majority of non-Mario 3D platformers)' is yes, then it'll be worth revisiting I'd imagine.

I like it, but FLUDD is a weird design decision and messes up a lot of the platforming as levels aren't always built with it in mind. For example, the harbour level is great, but it punishes you for falling off in a way that wouldn't fly in M64. I personally enjoy it, and it's full of colourful environments, and neat technical tricks, but it misses the abstract attitude towards level design that makes Mario games so flexible.

I should clarify what I mean by levels being built without FLUDD in mind. They're built as places you explore with FLUDD, rather than playgrounds that FLUDD helps you play around in. There's too much running to grab water in places because, again, these are real settings that you happen to be in, not abstract toyboxes.
The hangtime that flood gives you when you hover is pointless, and not an enjoyable use of the hover mechanic when you're forced to do it every jump. It's a weird old game, but I'd still play it all the way through again I think. -
I think that's why I love the first area and it went downhill from there. The first area was a beautiful green playground where Fludd wasn't entirely necessary but provided extra play. But later levels just didn't feel very well designed and required a lot of Fiddly Fludding.I am a FREE. I am not MAN. A NUMBER.

I'd play it again. I really enjoyed it. You just need to get over that it isn't Mario 64, and you have to approach things differently.

Sunshine seems to have less goof feel in the platforming. Even the abstract stages dont feel as natural as smg. I think it's because the 3d fudge in sunshine, the fludd, is removed from the abstracts but brings with it the inherent problem of three d platforming in a non real space projected two dimensionally. The smg fudge, star spin, is universal so every aspect is fit around the mechanic that fixes the game.

Sunshine still has some of the best water effects in games. -
