MS haven't said anything about it having back cat, but if it is on a VM, that does make life a hell of a lot easier should they decide to do it.

  • Although not directly linked to the thread subject, I feel this is apt as it raises the issue of needing to be online with these new consoles in order to get patches for games that are released broken and unfinished.

Hilarious Eurogamer Singstar review on PS4.

I had to post this because it just emphasises the enormous backward steps this industry is making. What with this and the horrendous launch debacles on both new consoles and you've got an idea of how badly this new 'era' of gaming is going to be remembered.

Microsoft have just re-released a ten year old game on their new console and it didn't work for three days. (Master Chief Collection) The main component of this collection was working fine on a box and was getting on a bit over ten years ago. How can you get something so pivotal to customer satisfaction so wrong?

I feel bad for anyone that booked time off to play Halo 2 online again, and let's be honest, I reckon that's what most people were buying the game for.

I'll never book time off to play a launch title again.
  • Yep, postponed reviews are doing the reader a disservice. They should allow a day one patch and then review. If the MP is broken that should be reflected in the review score. Those Metacrotic averages would make the publishers think twice before selling a dud.

Did they offer BF4 players a refund?

The problem is, there is zero reason to take them at their word based on past promises.

  • I think the popularity of remakes and definitive editions mean b/c is a thing of the past.

Capcom are about to re-release a 12 year old remake of a 18 year old game and The Last of Us PS4 has sold more than most 'new' games this year.

  • Yeah rereleasing, remakes and upressing are very lucrative.
  • I suppose it's a trade off though - Halo MCC looks like it might haul the One ahead of the PS4 for a couple of months in US sales, but they probably wouldn't have been so far behind if they hadn't given 360 owners a reason to make a clean break from MS by not including BC.
  • The money isn't in the console, it's in the games. And MS particularly have tried to squeeze the 2nd hand market to the point of non-existence. So while I would also have already upgraded if I could have seamlessly just carried on with my old gen setup, I'm upgrading at some point, they know it, and they want to take as much money from me as possible when I do.

This is the last gen imo that will resemble consoles of years past. It will all be download and streaming based by the next one. If other companies get in the mix properly (amazon, Apple, Google), this is how they'll do it. It would be disappointing to say the least if instead of a Netflix like service, old copies of games start getting removed just as new ones come up. This is how EA will go. I doubt I'll be able to play FIFA 18 just after 19 has come out. I'd probably just have to subscribe to FIFA for a year and play whatever is given to me.

Exactly, as good a package as MCC is isn't it just 2 thats been 'remade'? To my knowledge the other 3 are just the 360 games upscaled etc.

If the XOne was b/c those 3 games would already be perfectly playable.

  • I'm staggered that they can't get the matchmaking right in games that are over ten years old. The work has already been done before just fine. You'd think server and lag issues and such wouldn't be an issue for games so old.

For all the talk of dedicated servers and a streamlined online experience, gaming online on the new consoles is actually an inferior experience.

If the future of gaming is a rental service as such, then the whole system needs a massive rethink. I'm damned if I'm spending my hard earned on a game that could cut off at any minute due to connection issues, not connect at all, and then once playing, is rendered unplayable due to lag and to top it all you can't even sell it if you hate it.....wait.....oh shit.
  • At least now it's full PC architecture b/c should be a given for future consoles.
  • Uggh the thoughts of games as a services is awful. I know a lot of software companies are going the subscription model route but for a lot of games I dont think this is suitable. Its one thing charging monthly for a piece of software used daily in work but quite another for games that you may only want to pick up every couple of years. The sub model might work with the COD/FIFA crowd but not for others types. I bought the monkey island remakes.I've finished them but I know ill go back to them at some point soon. Buggered if im going to pay for that privilege continuously.

GaiKai, one day to be released as PlayStation Now, and integrated with phones, smart tvs and of course ps itself. Pretend I'm wearing my Sony alt head right now, because I'm right about this. It's like GGMP(?) but not as lagless and serves video the other direction

  • If we go to service I would imagine you would subscribe to Activision or ea in the same way on tv in the us, you get a cable package. The most popular games night look to have an additional sub on top of this like a season pass. Pushing the idea on further if set too boxes and smart tvs become good enough ea may try to bypass the ms or Sony consoles and simply run their service as an app available through pc, tablet, phone, tv and set top box.
