Exclusives
  • A quick check says you are right. Well done sir. It's not one that I recalled. 10 points.

  • So out of that entire list only Red Dead Redemption and Dark Souls were released as multiplat?

  • On consoles, yes. Dark and Redemption also happen to be sequels to console exclusives. Would be easy enough to replace Dark with Demons too. I imagine not as many people played it.

  • What can I use these 10 points for?

Revolver was better than Redemption, too.

Multiplatform would only be better if you it was possible as a 360 player to play a ps3 player on the same game.

If I know you, you'd be the first to complain if any differences made cross-plat gameplay unfair.

    Preach, but it's not enough.

Never played Revolver, I'm tempted to check it out on PSN as I loved Redemption.

Wasn't that multiplat anyway? Xbox OG right?

    It clearly wasn't.
  • Ok, yes, if you love shit games it clearly wasn't.

My bad, it was indeed multi. PS2 and Oldbox. I had it on Oldbox and enjoyed it, though.

Who was it on here that burnt a copy of Redemption?

  • Hehe. I actually have the GOTY edition but haven't touched it. I probably won't get the time.

Yep. The choice used to be more than that too. Mario 64 and OoT, Nights and Panzer Dragoon Saga, Crash Bandicoot and FF7. Nowadays it's which Batman dlc suit you get.

This. I miss the days when the consoles were so radically different from each other that there was a genuinely compelling reason to own them all rather than a more cynical one. And because of it, you'd see games only possible on those formats, the formats themselves having radical differences in vision. Ocarina of Time just wouldn't have been possible on the PS1, but likewise the N64 wouldn't have played host to Metal Gear Solid.

It's a shame the days of the specialised console are so seemingly over, though, as evidenced by Wii U and 3DS and the sheer lack of platform-exclusive indie titles, or the incredible similarity between PS4/One.

Even smaller indie developers would rather (and who could blame them?) target several platforms rather than one. Titles like Spin the Bottle and Affordable Space Adventures are a rarity, and SteamWorld Dig didn't turn a profit on 3DS alone despite selling over 100,000 units.

But yes, I'm all for exclusives when for creative reasons or even business reasons: Bayonetta 2 needed Nintendo's funding, Sunset Overdrive probably wouldn't have found a publisher and Sony wanted IP rights, etc etc.

I recently played the terrific DEVICE 6 and Year Walk and even those games felt made for iOS: they utilise a lot of UX/user experience features that are exclusive to that platform. One puzzle on Year Walk played off iOS's rubber banding when you reach the end of a list, for example.
  • Exclusives are often the best games on a platform. Exclusive content is worse than uncooked cancer. Fuck exclusive content. Fuck exclusives. Fuck closed platforms. I want a consortium that works like BluRay, USB or WiFi. Not quite as open as PC because I like things to be QA tested before they're sold.
    "..the pseudo-Left new style.."
  • In the age of mega PCs, fuck all exclusives. Buying an entire machine for a single or handful of titles is grotesque.
  • Oh look I basically wrote that already on the last page, hooray.
  • Not sure I agree, Fronk.

The 3DS and WiiU are very distinct machines from Vita and PS4, with very different capabilities -and user base demographics - reflected in the titles available.

I wouldn't disagree PS4 and Bone are rather interchangeable.

How? What else am I supposed to do if a game I want to play is released exclusively on a console I don't own?
  • No, I mean it's grotesque that the nature of platform competition stipulates that this is even a thing consumers need to do. I can't blame anyone for stomaching it, I have myself.

The whole gardenwalling system can eat a plate of dicks.

I should have elaborated: what I meant to say is the days where it's sustainable to have radically different consoles are now over. Sure, Wii U is radically different, but because of that publishers just aren't going to take the risk and build an original Wii U project from the ground up that *needs* the GamePad (think ZombiU), since they wouldn't be able to port it over and get a higher return.

I didn't mean handhelds: budgets are lower on handheld and the Japanese market moving towards them has meant it is sustainable.
  • Yeah I think that's true for third parties but to be fair hasn't it always been that way?

Edit: although I imagine ports are easier these days than when you had radically different hardware like SNES and Mega Drive.

You only make a game exclusive if you get a bung and/or it'd not get made any other way.
  • To an extent I think you might be right. Just may be a case of the shifting market: while experimental games like Trauma Centre and Trauma Team could only have existed on Wii and DS due to their well calibrated input devices (Trauma Center: Second Opinion has one of my favourite control schemes of all time), you could argue these sorts of specialised exclusives have shifted to smartphones.

Simogo is one developer that was (well, Simon Flesser) inspired to make games because of the DS itself, now they make the sorts of games that could only work on an iOS-like platform.

This seems the right place for the SF V chat, which is crossing multiple threads as it stands.

Also: was there less outcry for e.g. Bloodbourne?  Because that's new IP?  Because it's "more" Japanese??  Because it's a nicher market???

    Because it's a new IP.
  • As someone who's always enjoyed the 'console wars' part of all this, I don't really mind it tbh. I'd even go so far to say it's part of the fun for me.

What does bother me much more is exclusive content. So for example, PS players get significantly more Destiny than XB owners despite paying the same price, and that feels unfair.

    It's not really though.

I think people are taken aback because SF isn't the kind of game you'd expect to be exclusive. And no doubt there's lots of tournament players and fans who own a Bone or were about to buy one.

I've not seen the SFV trailer yet, does it even look like it needs to be next gen exclusive?
