I consider Oblivion a rival to Moon (although I don't suppose that is a popular opinion).

Depends exactly what kind of sci-fi you’re into. Still, I wouldn’t argue too much.

Also, didn't we just solve the problem of gravity in the Film/Video Discussion Thread?

Whoa, that’s come from left-field. I like Oblivion, it’s a beautifully-designed fun time of a movie, but there’s no way I’d call it great art.
    Spoiler:
  • I prefer Morrowind.

I personally put Arrival alongside Interstellar. I have no issues with that. Arrival is a more rational film (in that it's more grounded in the science) even though it has an emotional punch the way Interstellar does. But the latter's metaphysical aspect makes up for it. They are both superb films (as is Moon).

In & Of Itself is a filmed performance of extraordinary skill and human insight that is pretty much impossible to categorise. Derek Delgaudio shows himself as the master illusionist and card mechanic but uses them as playthings to explore what it is to be oneself, using his own story as a template. This was performed over 500 times off Broadway and would have been quite an experience; borderline life affecting. This filmed version uses footage from several different performances.

    Spoiler:

Yeah, I'm not really nominating Oblivion as a best of all time film, but for me it gives Moon a run for its money, albeit in a flashy, experiential way (much like Tron: Legacy).
    Spoiler:
  • Moon is way above for me but I love bottle movies.

I watched 12 Angry Men the other week, ultimate bottle movie.

Interstellar and Arrival are both knocking on the door of my all timer list.

The list has included (in no order) 2001, Bladerunner, Solaris (original) and Forbidden Planet for an absolute age with no candidates for addition and then two came along ( or it felt like that - they are 2 years apart) "at once".

I'm holding judgement on Dune pt1 until I see pt2. So far it's looking for force its way in out of pure spectacle and planet building. My top tier ask big questions about what it is to be human and what the limits of it are - so Dune may or may not make it.

There's a large top notch 2nd tier with recent work like Oblivion and Moon. (I put Alien,  Matrix, the original Star Wars trilogy et al in here). Really great stuff has been appearing of late. The Martian is a cracker too. I consider Contact to be under rated and it's at the top of my 2nd tier.

Absolute top 10 movie. I'd also suggest Glengarry glenross as a solid bottler.

I loved this. One of the best things I've watched in recent years. As you say, would have been amazing to go to one of the shows
  • Rear Window is the bestest bottle movie.  THE BESTEST.

Sunshine was fucking brilliant until the final act. It didn’t need a monster, it already had flawed humans.
  • Aye, such a shame that. So much goodness undone by one of the worst final acts in cinema history.

    Missing

Spiritual sequel to Searching. Mum and partner go missing on holiday to Colombia, 18yo has to use everything to track them down. Done via PC screens, phones etc. Twists everywhere. I am a sucker for this stuff, loved it.

    The Strays

On Netflix. Opens with a working class woman in bits who then runs away. Cut to 20 or so years later and she's upper-middle class, beautiful lifestyle, husband, two kids. Putting on an accent each day, wigs etc. Progresses to slowly unravel as she starts seeing things/people, and it all goes mad.

    Really enjoyed that.

Page Eight Absorbing and enjoyable political/espionage yarn with Bill Nighy and Rachel Weisz in the lead and a great support not least from Michael Gambon and Felicity Jones. Excellent stuff.
