Movie Record 2022 Edition
  • I loved everything about Dredd as an old 2000ad fan.

But timing was a bit off coming after so soon after the raid, there was a samey feel even though they are not the same at all.

    Gonna rewatch Dredd

Proper Dredd love in here. Righteous behaviour.

  • Everything Everywhere All At Once
There’s a fine line between madness and genius and this movie straddles it perfectly. Complete insanity held together by Michelle Yeoh’s charisma. Marvel movies take note: This is how you do a multiverse story.
  • 47. Top Gun: Maverick - 6/9
Both expectedly and also unexpectedly, this was fantastic. So glad I managed to catch it on the big screen as it was a true feast for the senses, pure fighter jet porn.
In short, a perfect sequel - not a perfect film (still too corny and cheesy in places for my liking) but just a better film than the first in every single way. The acting, the writing, the cinematography, even the music which sees an update to the main theme that I can’t get out of my head.
Last but not least, Jennifer Connelly. Worth it for her alone.

The flying in Top Gun M really felt "real". That sim run up the valley had a real kinetic feel to it. Marvellous.

It is a classic. Haven’t seen it for years and think I’ve only watched it twice but was blown away when I first watched it back in the 80’s.

It's possibly topped by Paths of Glory, but yeah it's a stunning film.

  • Fantastic film. There's always a lot of talk focused on the first half (rightly), but the second half is great too.
  • FMJ that is.

Paths of Glory is high tier Kubrick. He met his wife on that film also, she's the singing lady iirc.

Always found Full Metal Jacket to be the weakest of all Kubrick's films. Never got the love for it. Rewatched fairly recently to see if I'd changed my mind but I haven't. The first and second part have no real connection and the second part has no weight. Film seems kind of pointless. I say this as a huge fan of Kubrick's films.
  • Strokes and folks eh, I love it.
  • The book Dispatches by Herr is a great read, Kubrick based the film on that + the Short Timers (Part Timers?) and Herr co-wrote the screenplay I think. This is all common knowledge no doubt.

      That's right.

Rewatched Bela Tarr's Damnation last night.  Improves with a rewatch but if anything it ups the destitution and despair. But there are some superb moments - the song near the start was the one I took away on the first viewing (only this time the singer's grungy sexiness has increased) but the sweep across doorways before the party showing a most marvellous collection of faces is quite likely the highlight.

Hardly anything happens but I find the long lingering shots with thoughtful glacial camera moves magnetic and I can't look away.

    48. Avatar - 8

Still enjoyed this and watched with the missus in anticipation of the sequel. She enjoyed it too and said it was a very pretty film, can't argue with that.

    49. & 50. Maze Runner - Scorch Trials and Death Cure - 6 and 6

Very much diminishing returns these sequels to what was a solid Hunger-Games-For-Boys opening movie, some decent acting from the kids, but the story meanders across these overly long movies.

    51. Lord of The Rings: Fellowship of The Ring - 10

Still a classic. It has taken years but finally persuaded the other half to watch it despite it being the extended version and she enjoyed it. And yes, she can binge watch 4 hours of Netflix but a 3.5 hour movie is too much.

    52. In Time - 7

Does what good Sci-Fi does well, it nails the state of the world perfectly, despite a slight cheap feeling to the film and some sub-par acting from Timberlake, the supporting cast are most solid and feels even more relevant now than it did when it came out.

    53. 13 Lives - 8

Missus suggested this and I wasn't expecting it to be as tense and well-made as it was. After all, if you followed any of the news then you knew the outcome, so how could they build tension? Well they manage it really well. I'm not claustrophobic but there were times I was holding my breath and wincing at what the rescue teams went through. Brilliant stuff, dodgy accents from Viggo and Colin and didn't realise until the credits that it was a Ron Howard film. Highly recommended.

    54. Contact - 9

My go-to comfort sci-fi flick of what would probably happen should aliens contact us. James Woods nails the real-world response.

    55. Top Gun: Maverick - 6

Said it all in the Film thread, but was really underwhelmed by the lack of tension and plot in this. The flight scenes were obviously very well done and it all looked pretty but I honestly can't feel it is any better than the original (which I will re-watch to confirm) they just made it more serious to try to give it some credence and it appears to have paid off with lots of people swallowing the emperor's new clothes.

    Contact's a good 'un.

Re Top Gun's lack of tension and plot - that isn't exactly why I would watch a Top Gun film....  :)  Pure hokum with a side dish of jingo-ism and hoo-hah.

  • See How They Run
Watched this with the family as we were looking for something lightweight and fun.  From that perspective, it pretty much delivers. It's a comedy Who-dunnit set in the 1950s, in which a film producer is murdered backstage at a performance of The Mousetrap. I suspect it got bankrolled in the hope it would be another "Knives Out". However whereas that film has a proper murder mystery nestled amongst the silliness, See How They Run doesn't really manage that half of the deal. Partly because the mystery itself isn't all that mysterious, and partly because half the characters are real people that we know didn't go down for murder in the 50's which rather limits the list of suspects.

Still, whilst the murder mystery doesn't quite hold up, the comedy half of the equation is better served - particularly in the film's first half. Most of the comedic heavy lifting comes from Sam Rockwell and Saoirse Ronan, with Rockwell largely playing the straight man for once. They both have impeccable comic timing, and manage to elevate stuff that arguably wouldn't work in lesser hands. (Indeed, not everyone in the film manages to pull it off so well).

Oh - it's also probably not a movie for anyone who somehow managed to go their whole lives both wanting to see The Mousetrap, and not knowing who did it. The film manages to spoil the ending and include various bits of the play, including the main motive of the killer. It treads a fine line between being an homage to The Mousetrap, and actively taking the piss out of it. (Various characters comment on its relative failings.)

So, yeah. Not a classic of cinema, but a reasonably entertaining dollop of escapism none the less.

You ever watch Devils on the Doorstep? Not really a war-war movie, as opposed to a movie set against the backdrop of a war, but it’s a cracker and I reckon you might get something from it.

    77. Nope
Loved it. I'd managed to avoid pretty much all details about it and so glad I did. I was particularly taken with the whole concept and aesthetic, but it was also just really well executed. Don't want to say too much more for fear of spoiling but will add it was an excellent cast, all on great form and I particularly enjoyed Michael Wincott's (aka Guy of Gisborne/Top Dollar) extended cameo and scene stealing. Doom Don't ask me why. I just did. This could have been a hell of a lot worse but it's formulaic fare with the Doom franchise wrapped around it. I only watched it when I saw The Rock and Karl Urban were involved.  The 1st person ghost train sequence looked a bit cheap but it was fun and even hinted at the trademark Doom humour.

This franchise could be put to so much better use, especially now when the CGI could create room filled with Hell Knights etc.  Why the contrived transport method when warp gates would be easier?  The infection plot is weak too though a great deal more could have been made of it - but - ultimately it#'s Pound Shop "The Thing / Zombie flick" material.

OK but don't out of your way to watch this if you haven't already.
