Top Gun:Maverick
Tom Cruise plays a character refusing to age by going back and doing the same thing he did 35 years earlier and being even better at it, while replacing the female characters with younger versions.
But drop the cynicism, because this is a great movie. Not a patch on the original, but far, far better than I ever expected.
All the Wolverine films are really good. The origin film and the Samurai one are both excellent. The original trilogy are worth watching too....even the 3rd one with a Wolverine-centric eye is good.
The time travel one is splendid too as it"s centred on him for a fair bit.
Jaws in the late 70s was my first truly great cinema experience. That and Empire Strikes Back are still to be bettered. Mainly because of the age I was I suspect.
Everything Everywhere All At Once then. Quite a ride. I remember the multi-verse Family Guy episode and loving the idea and here we have a full-on film based on it. Bonkers, sad and uplifting at different turns. But always entertaining. Marvellous stuff.
Sinister is a bit annoying with the silly horror tropes such as idiotic decisions by Ethan Hawke's main character and dark rooms but it's a delightfully creepy film and otherwise well done. I hear there's a sequel but I can't see that being worthwhile. A nice creepy little story that had me guessing throughout.
I thought that one was pretty good. Unexpectedly not crap bus poster horror.
Watched Dredd yesterday. I saw it when it came out and remember liking it but thinking the ending was a bit damp/anticlimatic for a comic book thing. It probably would've been a worse film if Cersei had strapped herself into a mech unit and accidentally crushed herself with a bit of the ceiling during an over-confident victory dance, but that's the sort of thing I expect/want from the last boss in these films really. It was very good on the whole though, even if it was a rip off of the building ascent in Shenmue II.
Dredd is great but suffered from coming out at the same time as The Raid. Two action films about tower ascents with top-floor drug dealers and one of them was an instant classic.
I suspect the Mega City One series will eventually happen, but these things take years and years. It’s incredibly unusual for us to have heard about it at the idea stage - the IP owners were trying to raise hype and get producers, funders etc interested.
