  • Top 5 Michael Ironside

    1. Total Recall
    2. Top Gun
    3. The Machinist
    4. Starship Troopers
    5. Scanners

Fuck Free Willy, dumb fucking fish.
  • It doesn't for a lot of it, more subtle stuff, but that ending is fucking fantastic.

You mean where our hero is joined by the mad professor from Back to the Future and *token Black Guy to perform an A-team style assault on the bad guys? That was just plain shite mate.

I was really hoping Nobody would be the 'thinking man's John Wick' (whatever that might look like) but it was just dumb. Not even dumb fun. Just tired hackneyed garbage for the most part.

I too enjoyed Nobody. Though I wasn't prepared for how fat Michael Ironside is now. RZA now packing a fair heft too. Good on them.
Michael Ironside.....Scanners , V mini series, Total Recall and Starship Troopers.  Peak. Anything else he was in?
Not to mention the original Sam Fisher!
  • He's made 138 films! One of which was Space Hunters: Adventures in the Forbidden Zone, which I have seen.

    Jeez.....forgot about Top Gun!!

    Haven't seen The Machinist.

  • Its a solid movie.

By law though I have to mention Christian Bale's massive weight loss for the role.

Where has Christian Bale gone anyway? A few years ago you couldn't go anywhere without seeing his mug.
    Ditto Tom Hardy.

The lack of any movies being released has meant that movie stars have been a bit underexposed recently.
  • Leos Carax, who wrote and directed Holy Motors has a new film coming. It’s a musical with songs by Sparks. So, it’ll be something...

  • I've got time for Driver.

There was a time back in the 90s when French films were all the rage - Pont Neuf, Delicatessen, Betty Blue, Jean de Florette... Classics the lot.
  • Aye, it was a good time for French cinema. It coincided with college/uni for me, so I was well up for it.

    Yup, arty student stuff.
  • Heh. Used to have a huge collection of arty foreign guff on the old VHS cassettes. We used to rent 'em out of the video shop and copy them on the edit suites in college. :D

Ben Wheatley’s got a new film coming out.

Not my kind of thing, but some of you may be keen.
  • The soundtrack’s outstanding. Think I already mentioned that somewhere.

Watched Capricorn One again after many, many years.

Great cast - James Brolin, Elliott Gould, Hal Holbrook, Brenda Vaccaro, Sam Waterston and OJ Simpson(!) among them.

Telly Savalas has a bizarre, out of tone cameo too - but then the tone is all over the shop in this. Pure hokum with some corny lines between Gould and one of my favourite 70s ladies - Karen Black.

It's well made and has some splendid flying shots - especially with a chase at the end. Given it was made in the 70s we would be unsure as to the ending. Holywood back then weren't afraid of downbeat endings. And it was made when the moon landing baloney would have been around too.

No classic but entertaining. It's actually almost kind of great had the tone been more level but I'm glad I watched it again. :)

I have a recommendation. Some of my favourite movies have just been added to Netflix. Page Eight Turks & Caicos Salting the Battlefield It’s a trilogy of British spy thrillers starring Bill Nighy. Calm, considered, and tense. Really, really nice work. The supporting cast is amazing: Rachel Weisz, Felicity Jones, Michael Gambon, Ewan Bremmer, Ralph Feinnes, Helena Bonham-Carter, Christopher Walken, Winona Ryder … just stellar. I have them on disc, but I saw them pop up on Netflix today and wanted to spread the love.

Watched Page Eight last night on your recommendation Pops.

Superb and right up my street. Slow burn, atmospheric and superb performances all round. Shall be watching the other two over the next couple of nights I suspect. Hadn't even heard of these before now, but thoroughly glad you recommended them. :D
  • I’ve had a stroke of luck in that Mrs Poprock has completely forgotten what happens and is up for watching all three movies again. Happy days.
  • I've hovered over those a few times, reckon I'll dive in this weekend, well fancy them.

Gotta like a bit of Mads

  • That new Mortal Kombat film is out tomorrow.
It is gonna be on HBO Max so will be on the high seas in decent quality.

There is no legal way to watch in the UK so they are basically asking for piracy.
  • Sky?
