As in his kid(s)? Early ish in the movie? Hmm, I was pretty unmoved. Can't think what memes those are but I guess I wouldn't have got them having not seen the movie!
As a father of a 2 daughters and a bit of an old softie that scene did affect me. I didn't weep or anything but it struck a chord. I really liked Interstellar. It's a 2nd tier effort for me - maybe 1.5 tier. I have it alongside Arrival.
The time element of it is what makes it for me - when they return from that giant wave planet for example. Love the robot design too.
The soundtrack probably gives it a more austere feel than it might deserve but I don't care. I really liked it.
I have started to watch Shoah this week. It is something I make a point of watching every few years. I'm 4.5 hrs in - so mid way. It's pretty relentless. 2hrs a session is enough. I can't imagine how this would have been as a cinematic presentation at over 9hrs - but apparently it did well in certain cinemas in New York.
I really need to take care of myself though - I have a taste for the dark and it can affect me. Still. This is a superb artistic endeavour too. The long tracking shots of 1970s Poland are stark but have a beauty of their own which is in contrast to the events that happened there.
Passengers. 2/3rds a nice little character driven movie which is resolved by a boring thriller type bit at the end. Feels like a producer came in at some point and said "We'll triple the budget if you put in more explosions and feel goods". 5/10
The Untouchables. Bags of fun. Less serious than I remembered it. It's bloody, but also has a sort of old Hollywood cowboy adventure vibe to it. Some of that's down to the Morricone soundtrack. 9/10
28. Justice League: Snyder Cut what did I just watch? Ok positives. Flash guy and Wonder Woman are great. I like Batfleck and shame he didn’t get his own film. But meandering waffle wasn’t needed for Snyder to get his vision across. He just needed to cut the Whedonisms out. Tbh I can’t remember the OG version so have no idea what has been added beyond the pointless epilogue that added 30 mins to the runtime.
27. The Truman Show
Haven't seen this since I seen it at the cinema. I'd forgotten how good it is and how great Carrey (and the whole cast) are. Plus it's only 94 minutes! Great stuff. 8
The Two Jakes has quite a cast. Starring and directed by Nicholson himself.
The main problem this film has is that it's a sequel to Chinatown. It's not bad but it feels it could have done with more care in the editing room. Nicholson directing may have been an issue too. It could have been a lot worse.
The period is recreated well but it looks a tiny bit low rent compared to the lush original - but what wouldn't?
The story isn't that great either to be honest. It's OK and connects up to the original in a non-intrusive way. Some of the dialogue comes over a bit corny because of relative lightness in comparison to the original. Overall a bit of a curio and worth a watch because of the cast and if a sequel to Chinatown interests you. Overall it's OK but ultimately this is pretty forgettable.
Midway through Ad Astra (classic multi-watch bubble bath viewing schedule). Intriguing. Think I prefer it to Interstellar. Might try Passengers next for the trio of long distance space travel movies.
Passengers was used as 4k hdr demo clip material by Currys. When i worked at currys i was sick to deatb of seeing the clip. So as a result i have no desire to ever see the film
29. Haven’t watched this since about 2000, but I always recall enjoying Dark City as a different take on something like the Matrix. The years have taken the edge off what is obviously a smaller budget film than The Matrix released a year later, but a solid cast well acted (apart from Sewell’s American accent) make it better than it should be. There are a lot of interesting parallels between this and the Matrix which makes me wonder if the Wachowski’s did the usual pass the script around Hollywood and it got rejected, but not before someone could plagiarise their ideas.
The other thing about Dark City was that it had a similar aesthetic to City of Lost Children, which had been a massive indie hit not long before it. Shame Dark City wasn’t actually as good.
