Islets (PC, Switch, xbox and not ps5, strangely), Hollow Knight without the Souls

So yeah, just hammered an hour of this and it's just about pitch perfect Metriodvania.
Delightful clean art style. Intro section and difficulty bang on.
A couple of uber tiny quibbles, but they largely stand out because the rest is so on point.

Spotted that on the EShop and popped it on the watch list. Looks better than most copycats.
Update when you know how long it is pls, won't bother if it's going for the full HK. -
I could be wrong, because I'm so early, but given I got through the basics of the first area in an hour and there's 5 islands/islets, I don't think it's gonna be hollow knight size.
My guess would be 10hrs pushing to 20+ if it goes hard on secrets and 100%ing. But will keep you posted.I'm still great and you still love it. -

It’s really good isn’t it? I’ve only done a little bit (what I presume is the first mini boss, couple of card upgrades and a movement upgrade) but it feels legit. It’s more welcoming than HK and the like and, I’m presuming, smaller and tighter but I think this may get word of mouth traction. Great find, Face. It feels great.

Yeah, it really does feel tight, my only quibble really, so far, has been accidently getting dragged into danger by the way the little slingshot orbs use the attack button. Got through a section then there's a destructible rock, I go to slash it, and get autoswung back into spikes. ffs.I'm still great and you still love it. -
Well, couple of handy things.
Was having trouble with controller connecting on pc.
1. Dev aware and looking to tighten code, but basically if game gives you grief, start it without controller plugged in and then plug it in once it's loaded. Also prefers usb2 as opposed to usb3.
2. On pc you can choose button icons between Xbox and PS versions. (as well as remapping them as you want, which is on all platforms, obvs.)
Given the next island a good run and game continues to give.
Just super solid.
I note on the discussion boards on steam basically the only concerns are from absolute fucking nerd fuck heads who find a way to see being able to adjust difficulty whenever you want as a bad thing.
Its the gamer equiv of being against cancelling student debt, apparently.I'm still great and you still love it. -
Islet 2 first pass done. 3 and half hours in. 17% completion. Bosses could do with slightly less health, or I could do with a heavy attack. They've all been solidly designed, but they're all learn the patterns, do the patterns. And they make you do the pattern a couple too many times, IMO. Far from a deal breaker though.

I've only got to the (or a?) first boss. Only played about 20 mins though. Really enjoying it though, gameplay is how I like things.

Apart from some pretty cute character and dialogue stuff, it's not that it doesn't anything groundbreaking at all. It just does everything really really well and works how you want. the intro to movement, what you can do in the first few areas, maps, everything. It just doesn't have any friction as far as trying to be too clever because the genre needs X or Y, it just goes: this what should be in a metvan, here it is, properly done, as you expect.I'm still great and you still love it. -
Ha, some of my favourite games of the last few years are [8]s that I loved enough to slap a [9] on. Flynn: Son of Crimson was one.

Very occasionally the checkpoints are a bit too stingy on this. That’s it. That’s my one complaint.

I hate bosses normally but I quite like these (and love their tunes). Would quite like to be knocking a bit more of their health off with a hit though.

Preach. That's my gripe. The bosses are well done, but man, can we be done a few hits earlier.

They are sightly spongey. But kinda easy enough once you've got your head round what they're doing that it's not too bad really...

This is really good so far. Haven't really got any proper gripes yet. Default controls felt ridiculous to me so I've remapped the map (and a couple of other things), but that was easily sorted.
The hanging boost spots take a bit took long to recharge and the fact that if you swing a sword within range you'll automatically get propelled towards them might be a problem if they end up appearing near enemies, but even that's fine so far.
Liking the save system too. I presumed if you die all progress is lost, but it doesn't seem to reset your unlocks, just moves you back to wherever you last saved.
Definitely a nifty little game so far, feels like less daunting Hollow Knight that also pinches a little Owl Boy. -
I love this. The shmup sections aren't the best but the rest of it is great.

I got thelast night and it just sunk straight into that amazing hook and loop that these games have of suddenly expanding and rewarding your time. It’s introduction was so perfectly pitched at just the right moment. These guys know their metroidvanias.Spoiler:
