1984. That's when Elite came out and everyone realised there might be something special in this video game lark. -
But it had no gameplay. -
I'm torn between one year between 1998, 1999 and 2000
1998: half life and MGS and ocarina.
1999: system shock 2, unreal tournament
2000: dx and majora. -
1984 is also when Jet Set Willy, Knight Lore, Skool Daze, Lords of Midnight, Tĺr na Nóg and Monty Mole came out.

Twas also the year Cave gave the world Deathsmiles and Muchi Muchi Pork! Granted I'd take the previous year's Mushihimesama Futari over either of those but over both? God tier danmaku either way. -

1984 is also the year of coin-op games - Bomb Jack, 1942, Karate Champ, Kung Fu Master, Ice Climber, Marble Madness, Paperboy and Punch Out.

Karate Champ was a fantastic machine, a twin stick fighting game.

I'm just shocked at the Prime 3 love. I think it's a brilliant series but 3 was in danger of being average at times.

Funny how quite a few of us love the 16Bit days but haven't voted for a year back then.
Probably because:
a) Few of us remember what came out when
b) Few of us got games upon release
92 had Super Mario World and Street Fighter II but the EU release of Super Mario Kart slipped to January 93. That would have been a contender for those alone, and I'm sure there was more 16Bit goodness that year... Sonic 2?オレノナハ エラー ダ -

That's it. I looked for some release dates but they seemed to be US ones. I think 93 and 94 would both be stellar in terms of proper new games, but the year of the SNES release in the UK (92?) would probably win just because there were so many games already out and ready to be released.
I'd also like to go back further and look at some of the 80s' years for arcade games, but that might be tricky too. -
OK, according to this list, only 44 SNES games were released in its first year, 1992, but they included:
F-Zero
Parodius
Super Aleste
Street Fighter 2
Super Castlevania IV
Super Ghouls 'n' Ghosts
Super Mario World
Super Probotector
Super Tennis
Zelda: LttP
UN Squadron
And that's just the SNES... -
Yeah that's a special year there, Turtles in Time is on that list to.
