Dirt Souls/Rally

I managed a top three overall finish. Amazing. Nailing the slidey Finnish roads is a white knuckle ride.

It sure is. I like that all the countries have a distinct feel. Wales is my current bogey country.

Today's daily was the Escort Cosworth.. amazing how they've nailed the feel of the boost and the 4x4.

I've had a Rally where the top guy wrecked his car on a stage. It does happen.

Did you have to evade the stricken vehicle somewhere on the stage? That would be quite satisfying.
  • Krawcyzk broke his windscreen on the last day and dropped down the order sealing me the season win and the trophy.

I then found yesterday's time on the daily was top tier to!

Onto the elite championship group a for which I've picked the Delta Intergrale

  • Impressive - I'm struggling to better fourth in the Pro league.
    Xbox / PSN - DongleUnlimited
  • I probably should of picked the Escort Cossie.

Opening event is Wales which is probably a good one to get out of the way early doors pre-upgrades. Hoping for a podium.

It's that much faster and grippier which is nice but it's making the offs worse when they happen.

  • I can only play this in short blocks because it requires a lot of focus but when you're in the zone it's a thing of stressful beauty. Had a lovely drive through Finland last night, driving on a knife edge. Very atmospheric.

Weirdly, the gameplay reminds me of Simon, your co-driver tells you a pattern and you repeat it to the best of your memory. Except he never says drive off a cliff. Or clip a bank and spin 180 degrees. Or drive into a concrete block. Or drive into a tree. Or flip the car.
  • It's great.  Dipping into the dailies and maybe rattling off a couple of stages of a championship afterwards is time well spent.  I'm getting a grip on the tuning and finding it to pay off, although some elements I'm steering (ho) well clear of, camber, toe, etc. for fear of braking (ho again) more than I can fix.  I've watched more replays on this than I have for a racing game in a long time too.

  • Give us a few tips Webbins for setting up? I think I'd be able to find some time and drivability.. all I've been able to do so far is adjust my brake balance on the Lancia Delta so I've got a bit less understeer in the snow.

So far Elite is proving a tough challenge... I'm leading the championship after 2 events due to consistant second places but I'm no where near fast enough yet to challenge for the lead.. maybe after the second turbo upgrade.

Loving the dailies too but the amount of pressure not being able to restart makes them extra tough.

  • I had a little snoop around on the Steam forum as there were a couple of decent Dirt set-up guides.  I'll post them this evening as they are worth reading through to make your own decisions, as what you assume from them will be affected by your driving style and assists.

  • Have a look at the below, Bob.

    Car Comparison Guide

    Advanced Setup Guide

Bear in mind the second one is weighted more with the Stratos in mind but there's theory and application that works across the board.

  • I'm having a few issues with the co-drivers pace notes in Finland..

He often says don't cut when actually it's fine to cut.. and he should be more worried about how we're going to land or if we're going to go flying off on blind crests that go into corners.

I know occasionally he says keep left/right/middle over crest occasionally but more often than not he doesn't and there's a fucking bank, post, sign, tree right where you going to land.

I've taken to slowing for big jumps and having the hand brake ready for the curves.. but I'm losing over 5 seconds a sector to the leader in his Escort Cosworth.

I don't think so. He's still quite helpful. You'd have no idea driving by eye.

I find my times over the first sector improve every time I restart as you learn it but that's not really what rallying is about.. Besides some of the stages are lasting over 8 minutes now.. you can just about keep a memory of some of the tricky bits.. For instance every time he says 'deceptive' watch out.. and usually if you see a house a big off is coming.

Generally I like the difficulty builds organically. By the Elite difficulty Monaco is snow and fog bound and it's possible to slip over a snow bank into retirement... that never happened early doors.

  • The co-driver has caught me out a few times, mainly through his definition of what constitutes a 4 or a 5.  I've set my co-driver to deliver the notes later and usually this is perfect but occasionally I've had the odd note be either very late or right in the middle of the bastard manoeuvre.  Never had trouble with crest positioning or jumps, I always approach a 'big jump' with a little less gusto as you're not going fast with your wheels in the air, but getting a good lift looks fecking awesome in the replay.

  • I'm going to have to set mine to deliver his notes a little later too. He's a touch too far ahead for my liking.
    The Forum Herald™
  • my issue with the co-driver is he didn't account for you crashing and start again...so he'll be telling you something 3 corners ahead whilst you're ploughing into some trees...you get back on the road, face the right way, hoof it and find yourself running at corners with the co-driver not saying anything...or worse he'll say 'easy right' just before you hit a hairpin left that he previously mentioned whilst you were doing a barrel roll.

Don't forget caution on coming Bint in Yaris.

So is anyone still playing this?

  • Just me and thee, Bob.  I struggled with the weekly at the weekend, Racenet was being a right bastard and not connecting.

Last time I went off piste I was driving to the Lake District and it was a twatty farmer coming the other way doing his best Tommi Makinen impression in a Land Rover.  Twat.

  • Im still playing but not as often, just too much on my gaming plate at the minute.
Been trying to get the weekly and some dailys done.
  • Double post.
