There's a lot of that, due to having to turn on the radar in each area, so when the area is new to you, you're running around blind. Once you've learned it a bit and have the radar turned on, it gets better.
Then again, I reckon you could have just as much fun by repeatedly punching yourself in the knackers. MGS2 is my least favourite MGS, though I am usually alone on this.
