Film/Video Discussion Thread

Some of lower ones sound like a Partridge made up film name.

Pretty much everything below level 3 appears to be that.

I distinctly remember reading about a film about a guy who fucked a pig which became pregnant. Thought that might have popped up on the list. Maybe it's one of those mythical things, but I remember finding a brief listing of it in imdb.

I really hope it’s titled Making Bacon.

There is a certain attraction to it in my mind but I know deep down that they will be pretty much universally badly made and of very little merit.   Being of a certain age I remember the appearance of home video and the furore over video nasties. At a certain age you are busting to see them. When I finally did I saw them for what they were - cheap badly made crap.

Today's stuff is much the same I reckon but the technology could make them genuinely disturbing no matter how badly made they are - but even at that are dismissable.

What adds to the disturbance factor of Salo is the fact that is beautifully shot. It's the only one I have watched at that level.

Heh. I think it was just called "Pig" or something similar. I have a vague memory of Barry Norman mentioning it on his show as part of a piece on disturbing films.

    I can see that.

One of the films, called Juvenile Crime is supposedly based on a true story. I would be repelled by that and would not go near it. Hard to find the truth about these things sometimes.

Myself - have no interest in the material. I did watch Salo as it was made by Pasollini and does have a message. But I found it hard to watch in places.

  • Faces of death at level 5!
I watched them when I was about 14 or 15, proper horrible snuff stuff on VHS.
Il never forget some of the horrible imagery burned in to the back of my mind.

When I was younger I was vaguely keen on these types of film, but these days I have no interest whatsoever.

Its this, I have enough horrible images burned into my brain, I can't imagine why I would willingly want to add more.

I get that some people like this stuff, I just don't understand it.

I never liked it, was with a bunch of other 15 year olds and my mum was at work and we didn't believe it were real.
It really was and was really nasty.
If I could erase it from memory I would in a heartbeat.

I really don’t get it. I can see where Davie is coming from as a kid with peer pressure etc.

I like a bit of fantasy horror so anything sort of Dracula, Alien, The Thing etc. I’m not a fan of realistic stuff that could happen or horror porn stuff.

Yea I agree with you Boris. I want a degree of detachment from the horror.
I go to movies as a way to escape life, I want to be entertained. Not disturbed.

I think it is a kid thing. I'm generalising here and I speak for myself only - but there was a real morbid curiosity about it. And some people don't progress past that I'm guessing. Both content creators and consumers.

I get the technical aspect of it too - just how gross can you be using practical effects etc.

Just trying to rationalise why this stuff is made.  :/

I tried searching for info on that pig film but only ended up with links to bestiality videos. No thanks.

There's an age factor. Probably 30 years ago I would have been morbidly curious but now it would most likely upset me. I made the mistake of just reading about serial killer Albert Fish and I felt almost ill for days.
  • I have a bit of an aversion to gore now thanks to seeing quite a few bodies in various forms of decomposition and "completeness".

Theres an image burned into my brain of a man who I found in his flat in a high state of decomposition with no face at all, just a messy "bowl" of maggots where his face once was.

I still have a certain morbid curiosity about the darker side of life - what makes serial killers tick, the Holocaust/Shoah etc.

Makes we wonder a bit about myself. I tend not to over indulge it as I have depressive and OCD tendencies.

I remember Mark Gatis, who's a horror buff, saying something similar. He's less able to stomach the visceral stuff as he gets older.

I've seen a lot of horror films because I've got a I've got a friend who's into them, but I've never really seen the attraction. I guess I do sometimes enjoy a bit of the old ultra-violence when it's in an action movie.

The iceberg model is the subject of some YT videos which is what prompted me to mention it, otherwise I have little interest myself.

  • I like a good disturbing film but I draw the line at snuff/IRL stuff. I've seen a handful of the tier 4 stuff like Nekromantik, Guinea Pig series and August Underground. I'm surprised the first two are in tier 4 tbh, Nekromantik used to be in video shops. Guinea pig is a famous series that includes a riotous comedy episode too, and Flower of Flesh and Blood is well famous, it's a must watch for fans of practical effects in horror.

I think tier 5 is probably the last 'regular' tier and I'd dip into that, but the final tier sounds way too far out of my comfort zone and I think one or two are only available on the dark web.

Salo was rescued by the BFI I think due to its significance.

Sam would have been good. Brosnan would have got the job earlier but he was contractually obliged with the producers of Remington Steele.

I read that Brosnan was how Fleming pictured Bond in his mind.

Always thought Clive Owen was a good shout too.
