Overheard at work, made me chuckle

  • Yeah, I like that. It's XKCD again.
  • I've been using Redshift for a while and I think it's made staring at the computer less tiring. Could be the placebo effect, but...
It's not hard to configure, an once it's done, you'll forget it's even there.

I want to say this to the missus, but it'll probably go over her head. :(

The Dell M3800 Linux laptop. I may have just found my next computer.
For those with an open mind, wonders always await! - Kilton (monster enthusiast)
  • It is a nice piece of kit no?
MB pro type specs with Linux running on top of it.
And official Linux support tot boot.

    Still, expensive hardware....

  • From past experience, I wouldn't trust anything from Dell; their laptops appear to have been designed and put together by monkeys.
  • Alienware isn't that bad, is it?

  • No idea, I've never looked into them because they're so fucking ugly. I mean, you'd think that, considering how expensive they are, they could pay for a decent designer.
  • Agreed, gamer notebooks aren't really my thing. Too many flashy colorful leds screaming at you.
Apple and Asus stylings suit me much better.
Asus UX-501 or G-501 design is miles ahead as is Asus N-series.
They don't have the official Ubuntu support but you can't have everything.

The HP Omen and Spectre series also look nice and spec wise they're not bad either.

Gamiing on mentioned laptops should also be decent, the specs far outdo current gen consoles.

Devs I know hate alienware- not sure of specifics but something to do with how they arrange / manage and drive their PCI bus, meant developing with Rift and other technologies were a cluster fuck, expect them to have issues with software too.

That is the one thing putting me off, but it looks to be getting decent reviews.

Remember, it's not a real gamer system if it doesn't look like it was designed by a 15 year old with ADHD who lives on Red Bull and was given the design brief "make it look well wicked innit".

  • That Dell looks great. However, my next laptop must be another ThinkPad. Or at least have a trackpoint.

I've come so close to getting a secondhand ThinkPad so many times over the last 18 months or so.

  • Remix OS for those who want an Android based desktop and can't wait for Google to finish AndroidN.
It's still an alpha (or beta) I believe but the project looks promising.

  • Why would... No, never mind.
  • This is just an Android M mod and is booted in exactly the same manner as a linux distro on your pc.
The upcoming Android N will be mostly similar because it will be fusing ChromeOS into the Android code base.
Expect to see that shizzle running everywhere next year netbooks/notebooks included.

  • I'm very confused by the suggestion of Ubuntu on Android.

Why is this thread so hard?
  • Quick google:
    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ubuntu_for_Android

    A dual OS device, yarrrrgh!
I can see why they abandoned it in favor of convergence. It must've been a resource eating, battery munching monster.

  • So it's just people using the wrong words again? FFS.
  • Just skimmed the Wikipedia article. There's a lot of bollocks going on with people doing things for no other reason than the fact they can. Which would be fine if it was a hobby thing and people weren't all going OMG.
  • But then, if I could get idiots to give me money for doing my hobby, I probably would too.
