Retro Club - 8 & 16-bit puzzlers

Yeah choose you own week but I wouldn't cut Actraiser short for it, that's quite a deep and involving game, 2 weeks would probably be best for that.
Yeah, there are probably better candidates to cut short - like PC Kid 2 for example. Or GTA?

Or Vectorman, they're quite straight forrward games as far as I know.

Cool, if you two think the Mega Man X games are different enough then split them up like JonB suggested.

Anyone else played any Yoshi's Story yet?

  • Speaking of mega man has anyone seen that video of mega mans 1-3/4 being played simultaneously with one controller input? Genius if you get to see it.
  • I really ought to use this opportunity to play some Mega Man, never played one. It's X that I really really wanna play, though. Hadoken!!!

  • Oh God, I still remember Yoshi's Story intro music theme.
The intro screen looks like the artist overdosed on LSD while playing Yoshi's Island.

Started playing the VC version. The levels look nicer than the intro screens for some reason. N64 VC games appear to have been tweaked to look OK on widescreen which is a nice bonus.

Just played level 1-2: Surprise. Really nice level to start with.  Found 2 happy fruit. I scored 2697 on it.

2-2: Cavern - weird soundtrack - also worth a look - only found 1 happy fruit so only have 2 levels to pick from in world 3. Only scored 1592.

Shit. Level 3-2 has big fish that swallow you whole resulting in life loss.....A lot of the fruit is in bubbles that requires shooting with eggs to release them - so it's tricky shooting on the run as the fish are relentless. Got careless and lost too many lives too quickly. Game over.

Yoshi's Story is quite unforgiving - game over and your continue point is deleted. Back to the start.

Hmmmm....just found out that if you can find a white shy guy (one hidden in every level) and complete the level (he tags along behind like an egg) you can restore one of your lost lives. Cool.

  • Going to give this a good go this afternoon. I remember that C&VG liked it, and that was a decent mag during the early-mid N64 period.  When I briefly collected N64 games, I do remember not being too keen on this based on 20 minutes or so, and also Mischief Makers, which just felt like a letdown compared to some of the Treasure greats.  Chances are I was way off the mark with both.
  • Mischief Makers was rather good once you got into it. Would be good to play it again.

Yeah - Mischief Makers should be added to the list...it's one of those games I remember thinking that there was more to it than just a straight platformer - there's a deep control system for starters.

In Yoshi's Story there seems to be something more to coin collecting. A few times I have gathered a bunch of coins and all of a sudden a letter made of up them appears - I suspect there's a message spelt out with these - might unlock something - might not - sometimes Nintendo just stick little messages like that into a game for fun.

My eldest was playing after watching me fail and she managed to find the black Yoshi.

Some levels have a little mini-game and the quicker you complete it the more cantaloupes (the high scoring melons) get dropped on you. They are just slight variations on the main game and quite often are built into the level - they start with a straight start-to-finish flag race but later you are tasked with balancing a stack of melons while doing it for example - there's also a flutter jump course to complete.

Stand on the vases and press down - sometimes they are just warp you to the next part of the level, other times you just go to a mini game.

  • I've got Mischief Makers on my N64, but never played it! Of my N64 actually worked, I would bring it out to play.

  • Turns out I had more than enough Wii points, so I'm just waiting for the system to auto manage the stuff on my SD card so it can launch from the system memory.

This process has also reminded me I never completed MotoHeroz or Hydroventure, both of which deserved far more than the 90 mins each I gave them.

  • Up to page 5 on this.  If I were to design a platform game, it would be full of more perils and pitfalls than this tbh, although I'm gradually succumbing to its charms and already like it more than Kirby's Epic Yarn.  There's clearly more to it than meets the eye initially, hence some lazy reviews in 1997.

Nintendo succeeds at pulling off charm better than anyone else.  Ilomilo is a good example - I couldn't put my finger on what it did wrong, and I did like the game, but the 'you've found a cuckoo clock made of blancmange, and now you're going to wear it as a hat.  Don't you look fetching?' stuff felt a little forced, whereas 'the page turned, and the Yoshi's grew happier' manages to make me rather happy as well.  Perhaps I just give Nintendo a free pass when it comes to the twee stuff, but they've earned it over the years.

I did my first run through pretty quickly - have you managed to unlock any levels? Each page can have up to 4 levels - the higher numbered ones are definitely trickier. Haven't seen anything above level 1 on page 6.

The fact that Yoshi has the flutter jump makes things a mite easier too.

  • I think there were two boxes available to me on page 4, but I'm not 100% sure.  I'll finish this tomorrow (credits after six levels, right?) and start thinking about learning more of its intricacies.  The controls don't seem as precise as YI, although that could be down to the classic controller analogue stick.

yeah - 6 levels for a play through.   Two boxes on level 4 means you found 1 of 3 happy fruit in level 3 (the large heart shaped fruit that plays a little chime-bar tune you can hear when they are close by).

The control is a bit looser - as is the general handling of Yoshi who is a fair bit slidier that in YI - but then the collision/platform detection is a bit more generous too. I use a GC controller with the VC version and find it a pretty good stand-in for the original N64 controller - as odd as it was Nintendo built their games around it and I've always found it spot on.

  • Played another 45mins of this on Friday with Retroking (on his Wii U so starting from the beginning again), but choosing a different starting level to when I played last week.  I'm starting to really like it.

I tend to have a problem getting to grips with aspects of games that are optional rather than compulsory, which is why, depsite the two Galaxy games being amongst my favourite gaming experiences, I put both to one side once I had enough stars to attack Bowser.  I've never got full achievements on any game, for example - I'm happy to move on to the next game as soon as I can, and I've only occasionally (once?  Twice maybe?) replayed anything with a 'campaign' from the 32-bit era and beyond.  I'm pretty sure I wouldn't have got my money's worth from Yoshi's Story in 1997, partly because it's a rather basic and unremarkable platformer until the penny drops, and also because like most other gamers I was all over the 3D revolution at the time.  I doubt I'll spend much more time on it, although I may do the final two levels of my save file this evening, but I think I'm au fait with its depth and charms, and would probably rate it somewhere in the mid-to-high 80s.  It really is rather good.

Perhaps I misjudged Kirby's Epic Yarn too, because I only played for the credits on that and I've read there's more to it, but I thought this was far better even as a quick fix.

Glad someone else feels as I do about this one. It is a bit of a gem and an awful lot of people mistook it for a kids game after seeing level 1-1 or seeing it in a demo pod in a shop. At least you know it's there to go back to if the occasion warrants it.

I tend not to go for 100%-ing a game either - once the main quest is achieved I start to lose interest - but there are some games that really deserve further attention - some - like Yoshi's Story - actually need you to look at it in that way in order to be able to say you have experienced it.

i'm going to be playing Caesar's Palace 2000 (Dreamcast) all of this week - I am off to the US next week and will be spending some time in Las Vegas - so I'm getting some practice in on Blackjack and Video Poker - and this game features excellent implementations of them , including a coaching mode that moans at you when you haven't played optimally.

  • There's supposed to be a card game on the GBA that's very good, but it's one of the few highly rated titles that I didn't pick up during my GBA spree as I've never enjoyed those types of game in videogame form.

I have a weakness for them I have to say - though there aren't many good ones. Caesar's Palace on  DC, Vegas Stakes on SNES and Midnight in Vegas on PS1 are the only ones I've come across with decent control and presentation.  You would think that presentation would be a high point on that type of game given they aren't technically hard to create and most casino games are guessing games with limited interactivity - but an awful lot of them look crap and have irritating user interfaces.

UI design is an interest of mine and that's another reason why I like checking them out - I'm of the opinion that a really good casino style game with some elements of skill levered in would be very enjoyable. Poker Solitaire is great little game for example - a nice example of a game of luck with just enough skill to make it interesting.

Liked it so much I wrote a version:

Will have a look around for that GBA game - cheers.

On the surface it's quite dull and basic but play it long enough and it becomes surprisingly deep and rewarding. Good game overall but unfortunately most will never know it and to be honest I can't really blame them. As good as it is it just never grabbed me and sucked me in, instead I had to force myself to get it.

As an aside - if anyone thinks that Backgammon is over reliant on luck they should give GNU Backgammon a try - the AI is based on neural network tech and is brutal. I know it is easy to be suspicious about a game were the computer rolls the dice but you have the option to roll them yourself and enter the result - it makes not a jot of difference to the outcome. It is totally demoralising over a series of games.

I thought the only way to play black jack optimally was to card count, which is de facto illegal in Vegas I think.

Fwiw black jack played optimally is the game that has the best chance for a person to win vs the casino. Roulette is close (for obvious reasons) but is all luck. If you wanna play roulette like James Bond you play on two of the three boxes that cover 1/3rd of the numbers (high/mid/low)

Outside poker, Black jack and Video Poker are the two games that given the right set of house rules (which vary) have strategies that can at least make your money last longer - and with a little bit of luck (and a lot of skill and practice) - return a small margin.

Counters will be refused entry as the betting patterns are easy to spot by those who know what they are doing. I have no allusions of being that good - nor have I had the time and inclination to practice. The DC game does offer an advanced coach that keeps simple & complex counts for you but I'm playing basic strategy at present (and somewhat imperfectly too). The amount of variables such as deck size and house rules about splitting etc. means you need to be at it full time I suspect.

There is a basic strategy that doesn't require counting (indeed it is the same method that is enhanced by counting) that can give you a fighting chance of making your money last while playing.

Picking the right set of conditions (allowing surrender, 3:2 for blackjack or picking a 9/6 Video Poker payout machine) will help a great deal. Unfortunately these conditions are getting harder to find by all accounts.

I only expect to be able to make my money last a bit longer than just guessing and hunch play , and have a bit of craic in the meantime.

Budget management is the thing. With Video Poker you can set your own pace which is good - re Blackjack I'd be interested in finding data on how many hands an hour a dealer typically gets through - picking a busy table is probably a good way of stretching the money out too.

I have zero interest in poker as a table game - I had a bad experience years ago playing and almost lost a really good friend over it - so it has tainted it for me - which is a shame.

  • Thirty nine (fweek): Rollergames (NES)

I'm a day late with this, what with the transfer window excitement last night. I don't know much about this one, so I nicked this after a Google search:

In the fall of 1990, Konami (under their Ultra label) published an 8-bit video game for the Nintendo Entertainment System based on the high-stakes scene of roller derby against the backdrop of the side-scrolling beat-'em-up genre tropes of the time. The result was RollerGames, a unique entry on the NES library.
