The Gun Shop

  • What ever happened to gun games?

For years we had loads of gun games but they seem to have faded into oblivion.

I used to love Time Crisis and looked forward to each new one.

Surprising that with fight sticks making a massive resurgence that the market is crying out for a motion based gun game.

Thoughts on the genre? Miss it? Loved mad dog mcgree?
He could've just said they came from another planet but seems keen to convince people with his bullshit pseudoscience that he knows stuff. I wouldn't trust him with my lunch. - SG
  • I'm guessing that part of the problem is that light guns won't work on LCD/plasma TVs.

That left the Wii as the only real option (until PS Move)

  • I really wished they did a port of Point Blank on the Wii. It is absolutely perfect for it.

The Dead Space one is great, especially on the PS3.
  • Did they even release Duck Hunt on VC?

I'd like to see something that works with that Rift thingy.
  • i tried house of the dead on the wii and the move, it's nowhere near as accurate as the guns of old. i don't know the technicalities of it but the cursor doesn't seem to move in relation to where the controller is being pointed, its more abstract. there's no way you can play without crosshairs on and hit anything :(

there's orange namco guncon for the ps3, you have to mount a sensor on your tv but i never tried it. i really wish i hadn't sold my namco guns for ps2, those things were awesome. though i'd need a CRT...
  • Light Gun games were at their best at the arcade because of the big screen and hefty sound systems. Ironic then that LCD made that affordable at home, and killed them off due to the change in tech.

Me and Reg played this in London:

It was pretty awful, partly because the curtain had been torn down and the speakers were bust.

The king of arcade gun games is probably this:

  • I remember the days when it was tradition for a friend and me to going early to a cinema and bowling complex to play some HotD 2 first. That was some 15 years ago I think!

I did enjoy a quick blast at the arcades but I can't see myself playing gun games much on home consoles where I would prefer to sit back and immerse myself in a big RPG or something. Maybe on the odd occasion when I play games locally with friends but that's becoming increasingly unlikely due to time issues and socialising in other ways anyway.

  • I used to do the exact same before the cinema hylian.

HoD 3 I think it was.
  • i loved virtua cop in trocadero, its been a few years but i remember the screen being massive. favourite gun game might be time crisis 2 though, loved the co-op! i'd love one of those arcade machines.
  • Yeah TC2 is a proper classic.

My favourite pub at uni had the twin screened cabinet. Pound a pint and Time Crisis!
  • Time Crisis used to be my arcade of choice at Heathrow many moons ago when they actually had it. Was fun being a teenager and big brother playing it with me while we wait for our parents to land from another of their many visits abroad.

The airports only have gambling machines now I think.

  • Me and Wookie played Outrun 2 in an airport a year or two ago.
  • I played a light gun game that had a doorway of infrared sensors and you had to duck and move to get cover behind in game objects. No idea what it was called but quite good fun.
  • Ive played one like that too come to think of it.

Again no idea what it was called, cant really even remember the game itself.

Has anyone played those gambling based light gun games? I used to rinse a sniper scope one.
It would be a section of sniper scope where shooting bad guys would up the jackpot, then at the end you had to do a rotating dart board type thing to cash the money.

Nice, I'll have to pay more attention next time I go Gatwick or Heathrow; hate waiting and waiting for people to collect their bloody bags and come out to be driven home.

Or indeed next time I fly out to a holiday, but that will probably be Xmas time at the earliest.

I love gun games, and I used to be damn good at them. Point Blank on my brother's PS1, HotD on the DC, Gangster Town on the Master System, Virtua Cop on the Saturn, I put hours into them. HotD may have been the cream of the crop for me, although that might also have been because it was the only one I owned in a home of my own when I discovered that you could smoke while playing them. Quality stuff. Although it was always slightly disappointing that no-one made full use of the Dreamcast's light gun with a d-pad under your thumb.

The king of the arcade shooters for me was Silent Scope. A recreation sniper rifle with an extra screen in the scope. Great fun.

I have my fingers crossed for a revival.
  • Confidential Mission is an underrated gun game.  It didn't do anything exceptionally well, but it was solid throughout.
  • Oh shit Ocean Hunter is actually emulatable now omg

    Police 911?

Operation Wolf was always the goto arcade gun game of choice for me, and I always remember a 40s gangster type arcade game with a Tommy gun taking the stage consuming my pocket money. Played a Big Buck Hunter a couple of years ago in Whitby, fond memories of hammering Virtua Cop 2 on a Saturn at uni with housemates though.

I played the fuck out of every light gun cabinet on Southend seafront way back. Original HotD which I got for the Saturn, Crypt Killer (which in hindsight was a bit shit even in those days), Area 51, Operation Thunderbolt and everything else. Virtua Cop 3 almost got me to buy an original Xbox. Time Crisis I remember completely amazed me initially with the invention of the cover pedal by taking tons of my coveted £ coins.

God, some of these look shit now. I remember this game was the first ever I tried that had a shotgun. After 10 minutes of play my pumping arm was exhausted.

Can't forget feeling like a complete hero nailing all headshots in Silent Scope. The second one had a flash of the perforated skull when you headshot a boss.

The bullets moved through the air like a slug in treacle so you actually had something to dodge. Made the game feel more absurd than HotD.

Last time I went to an arcade with mates we tried Dark Escape 4D. Ocean Hunter mixed with Saw mixed with HotD. The game throws jump scares at you by the bucket load with gusts of air blown in your face. Also displays each players heart rate on screen detected by holding the mounted guns. Was certainly good for a laugh.

Point Break or whatever it was called was good for a giggle.

I've never been clear how light guns worked and why they don't on lcd/plasma. Someone Google me details pls im in the bath and feeling lazy thanx
  • Best answers I can find are that it is due to refresh rates of modern LCDs and their latency in displaying the millisecond hit box which then registers with the lightgun. There may be a more definitive answer out there though.
