Sky Odyssey out wings Pilotwings - especially seeing as Nintendo don't seem interested in updating. Lovely wee flying game that came out early and so suffers a bit from fogging etc but it plays brilliantly.

I really liked Outrun Coast to Coast

Flipnic - gorgeous pinball game that takes the genre to it limits with its impossible tables and multi-layered levels.

Couple of nice roll em ups - Mercury Meltdown Remix and Mojo.

Metal Slug was well served - 3 , 4 and 5 on separate discs in PAL with 3 being the pick having nice extras.

Castle Shikigami II is lovely despite it not getting the full PAL treatment - as is Gradius III+IV (though the latter is horribly difficult). They are both 50Hz only sadly.

Shmups that got the full treatment (that being 60Hz, highscore saving and TATE option) - Homura, Dragon Blaze, Samurai Aces, Tengai, Psyvariar Complete Edition and Raiden III (which is worth a packet in PAL). Mentioned already are RType Final and Gradius V which are the reasons I got the console in the first place.

Puzzle-wise - Aqua Aqua (Wetrix remake), Bombastic (Devil DIce remake), Fantavision and Detonator.

Contra Shattered Soldier - best contra game ever

Shame it came out before the 2D revival as it went a bit under the radar

Other than that Gradius V is indeed superb and Mister Mosquito was very left field

@regmcfly KH2 has some glorious combat in it. Story is FUCK though.

I'll add my shout out for Amplitude - truly excellent music-em-up without the need for assorted bulky pieces of plastic. Gitaroo Man too.

And Streetfighter Alpha Anthology opens up its peacock like fan tail to unlock loads of extra versions and modes the more you play.

As said Yakuza 1 and 2 are brilliant. Others worth a mention are Monster Hunter, SOCOM 2,SSX Tricky, Burnout 2 Point Of Impact,True Crime New York City, Blood Omen 2

Isn't this true for almost everything of serious worth on the PS2?  If I don't specifically want to play (but don't dislike) bizarre, oddball Japanese RPG things that require a complex translation, is there much out there you can't get with a shiny HD sheen?
