List clarification please - FFVI is my fave ever but hasn't (IMO) stood the test of time so well. Are you saying I shouldn't include it? Is this 'fave games you'd like to play now' or 'ones you have best memories of'. The rest of my list will take a while to ponder either way!

I just think it should be something you could still play now (surely FFVI is still pretty damn good!). I mean, I used to play R-Type a fuck load and think it was the greatest thing ever, but it doesn't strike me as being that great in light of what's around now. It's been surpassed and I couldn't say it's still a favourite now. I doubt I could play it for more than a couple of hours before getting bored.

So let's put it this way - what are best games, old or new, you can play today?

I'm gonna ignore this and stick with my top 10 evar, already started scribbling stuff down. There are better platformers to play today than Castle of Illusion on the Master System, but that's still going on my list.

My favourite game, isn't the same as the game I'd consider the best I've ever played.

Not easy.

1) Tetris (probably the DS version)
2) ISS2000
3) Advance Wars DS
4) Mario 64
5) Street Fighter 2 HDR
6) OoT
7) North and South
8.) Outrun 2
9) Halo 3
10) Double Dragon (arcade version)

This is quite a good start. I think 1/2 might change as i see lists go up. Its weird that my list is probably also strongly correllated with how much time i've spent on each game. Peggle and PvZ should be in there but they just can't get in.

Tricky, and impossible to order, but roughly chronologically:

1) Plankwalk (BBC) - looks rough as fuck now, but the compelling levelling up and frantic nature would make it still playable, and would be better left looking as it is.

2) Elite (BBC) - has to be the wireframe BBC version, i.e. with you left to fill in the blanks. Groundbreaking scale and gobsmacking programming. Would stand up today on a portable if someone could get round the controls issue.

3) Tetris (Gameboy) - classic. I hardly touch it now but it still stands up, and would be impactive released today.

4) GTA:San Andreas (PS2) - again, for the scale and the ambition. I did get this again recently but am not overly inclined to go back to it. Maybe it doesn't stand up, there's certainly plenty wrong with it but you have to have tried to fail. GTA IV was the most disappointing sequel I've played in the end, given my expectations.

5) Shadow of the Colossus (PS2) - no other game nails atmosphere like Shadow does. Peerless.

6) MAG (PS3) - for 'getting' teamwork, for genuinely putting you into a massive overall effort. A personal favourite because of the online leap I got from it - anyone of the 12 or so on here who were there will get it, it'll be lost on the rest and it can't be got back.

7) Railfan (PS3) - again, not going to be everyone's cup of tea but it is the densha that mostly achieves what I want, transported back to Japan and just brilliantly different.

Everybody's Golf (Vita) - the EG games generally are by far the best golf games and probably then the best sports games, and this is in a format that I can get onto far easier these days.

9) Jetpack Joyride (IOS) - I'm on my phone a lot, and like games, and have tried tons on the phone, and this is one of the very very few that are genuinely right and better in that format. Fuck virtual controls, fuck tilting, one finger pushes are where it's at. Play it right (i.e. for the challenges, with distance secondary) and it's perfect. I think I'm about level 435.

10) There are a few others that just understood fun, including getting the controls just right - and fun should be where it's at. Not fuck-boring traipsing about trying to figure out what you've missed (hello the Zeldas, up to Fez). I'd give honorary mentions to the first 360 Crackdown, for example. But I'd like to give the final slot to Ultimate Play the Game, if possible - despite not particularly wanting to play them now they often showed off stunning programming, and were fantastically original and influential. So a nod to Atic Atac, Sabre Wulf, Alien 8 et al. The GTA IV 'shit we've not recognised them yet' 10.

No. I won every cup on the hardest difficulty with every car when I had it years ago. Couldn't get enough of it, but it was always about racing in amongst 30 other cars for me, never really bothered with time trials. I still think it's pretty much perfect, bar some poor draw distances, and I found the Gamecube version a bit lacking.

The original is too slow and you can't do walk kicks or tspins.

TGM is brilliant but not portable.

I went with DS because I find the "well" in Tetris Party Delux to look visibly too small (or view is too far away) for me. I really like the new Tetris 3DS, its got lots of modes etc but its not massively exciting in terms of customisation and the dpad on the 3ds isn't as good as the dsl imo - maybe its positioning.

Tetris friends is very good but again too slow on the DAS and line clear stuff. The 30/40 line challenges are so slow compared to other games.

All tetris in essence is very similar and it would've gone top regardless but the versions do differ quite considerably in play mechanics and modes so I plumped with the DS version. Perhaps 3DS will take it over in the future or If i somehow port TGM3 to my 3ds.

interesting that fenton and nick went for smw over m64. I really really had to weigh that up but i was only going to put one mario game in my top ten.

also @ fenton - ts2? I fucking love that game. I harp on about chasm in the halo thread whenever mp maps discussion crops up.
