Gaming Pet Peeves
‹ Previous1234
  • So a thread to talk about those little things that annoy you when it comes to games.

One that's annoyed me today: Achievements that aren't multiples of 5. WHY? Now until I unlock some other achievemtn in the game that rounds it out I'll be on an odd number. Grates me.

    Anyone else?

Is that some OCD or summat? Just wondering, as mine's been odd, even and whatever else and it doesn't bother me.
  • Overly long tutorial/prologue sections. Especially The Witcher 2 because I still didn't have a clue what was going on after I'd managed to grind through it.
  • Cut scenes that can't be paused.

And the Gears-inspired convention of reducing character movement to a crawl whenever they're listening to an earpiece.

Possibly, it just doesn't look right!

  • Yup, MGS has taught me that if you put your fingers to your ear then the whole world stops.
  • Train yards and sewers.
  • ICE LEVEL

    FIRE LEVEL
  • I intentionally got an odd numbered achievement to get 9999 points.
  • Fetch quests bum me out.

I have one that isn't game-related really, but I hate that my controller, on rare occasion when playing Trials, will just seemingly give up, sending me into a vicious smash into the ground despite my inputs being fine.

This isn't so bad if it isn't JUST AFTER A FUCKING CHECKPOINT.

If you die, you get the whole convo again. Who allowed that!?

Games that won't let you turn off the music but keep the sound effects.

If I thought I could get away with it, I'd kill any designer that consciously didn't include the option. I haven't done so yet as I suspect I'd be a pretty cack-handed assassin.

Having to press the start button on a title screen.
JUST LET ME PRESS ANY BUTTON.
  • Sequels that expect you to remember the full button layout and how to perform every combo of them from a game released 2 years prior.

Menus that look pretty but don't function as a bloody menu. Fifa's menu system that is a cluster fuck of wrong.

NPCs standing in doorways and just generally blocking your way (Skyrim is very bad at this).
  • I have no more time for essays.
  • This entire thread will stand testament to the fact that games are still disgustingly broken things.

I'm guessing you probably don't play many Mario games.
  • Unlockables. Especially in competitive games.

Button configurations done the wrong way. The right way is a list of actions and you press a corresponding button.
  • Buying a shiny new game and not getting a manual to read. I'm sure it was EA who started that. Bastards.

The QTE. You'll see an image on the screen, see if you can press the button that matches the image and just to make it interesting(?) there will be a time limit. I'm not two you know.

Unskippable cutscenes which i'm sure has already been mentioned as everyone hates them but I can't be bothered to check.

Boss battles that are so dreadful they leave mental scars. A bit general but Dead Rising 1 & 2 left me a shattered wreck.

Single-player unlocking multiplayer stuff I will grant ye, but otherwise, NO.

Also themed music to themed areas luke jungle drums to jungle areas. Get more creative you lazy fucks.
  • Unexpected QTE's, especially with overly difficult button sequences. If you're going to make me so the fucking thing at least give me a chance of getting it right first time. To double up on unpausable cut scenes it's got to be unskipable cut scenes.

I can't stand unlock paths in online shooters makes it shit for anybody who isn't obsessed with the game.
  • Collectables, why? Do I really need to scour every inch of the game world to appreciate the world you have created for me Mr. Games Designer? Always tied to an achievement so that's me buggered. Some do give background to a story, most do fack all. Feathers, flasks, tags... currently golden guns and clues in Max Payne 3. The clues of which offer some insight into the story details but the guns are mere garnish.

  • Collectables in GTA: SA made sense – you upgraded your weapons stash. But since then nearly every game that uses that mechanic has just made it pointless OCD bollocks.

I take it you don't have a 360 as every single game lets you turn the music off (or change it to something else) and keep the sound effects.
