Your Video Game World Championships
  • Inspired by the Nintendo World Championships happening today and something that's been rattling in my head a while I was thinking what would be at a VGWC that I curated?

    What would in be yours?

Qualifying Event - Open to All - 32 regions - top 80 scores from all regions qualify to regional Finals.

Following the original Nintendo world Champs I'd have a custom triple game where two initial challenges set up the time limit (fixed timed challenge, speed of 1+2 determines remaining time for 3) for a final score attack, the final score attack being the main challenge.

    Triple Cart:

    a) get a score of 15 on WarioWare Inc (lost games dont increase score)
    b) break half the bricks in a custom Breakout board
    c) Get highest score possible in puyo puyo

Top 80 scores in 32 regions  become qualifiers to regional events (each regional holds 80 people)

    Regional Finals - 80 players

First heat 10 player Saturn Bomberman (8 groups of ten)

three rounds of saturn bomberman comprising ten players each - top two aggregate positions (i.e score 1 point for first - 10 points for last. lowest two scores qualify, ties decided on most numbers of firsts...seconds...thirds until a split can be found).

    16 people remain:

Tekken 3  to get down to final 4
Street Fighter 2 Turbo for the  final four.

Eventual winner goes to the grand final stages.

Grand Final Stages - 32 participants.

Pentathlon determines Final 8 to go into head to head  Semi Finals for the world championships.

Five Games - Cumulative score and each game's individual score weighted so that they are comparable (e.g. if game 1 gives 10 points and game 2 gives 1 point for a comparably skilled activity then game 2's score are x10).

    The five games.

    Ikaruga (one level)
    Virtua Cop 2 (hardest mode)
    Space Invaders
    Tetris (50 lines)
    StarFox

Semi Finals (8 participants, 3 qualify)
Mario Kart 8 four race championship Top 3 qualify for final round.

    Mario Maker Troll level.

One level designed by Miyamoto to straddle the line between Troll and Fair un seen by anyone ever before.

First one to the flagpole becomes the champion!

I vote crayon to host a b&b multi-title cup. Group stages, cross format, sort your own competition times out to be mutually convenient, games across many genres, b&b designed levels, etc

All current main genres would have to be covered so a knockout format wouldn't be fair due to the sequential nature of it.

A Decathlon style event would be required with some sort of scoring system used to normalise performances similar to that used in pinball tournaments. Sounds like that might crush the enjoyment out of it but it could work. Cue breathtaking comebacks in favourite genres etc.

    Selected titles as must-haves..

Tetris (prob. best for 40 line sprint mode)
Street fighter of some sort (II Turbo, 3rd Strike or IV?) - a mini knockout tourney with placings for points.
Sega Rally, Daytona or a modern one like Forza time trial
Some sort of Super Mario Bros time trial across a tough level
A 2D shooter in caravan mode (Star Soldier might be a good 'un) or simply a classic STG with a 1 credit run for score. (DoDonPachi probably)
Some sort of 3D run around in first person - maybe best to have a knockout tourney with placings for points. Prob one of the Halos?
    Bishi Bashi or WarioWare somehow..

Would imagine some wild card event - using Virtua Tennis, Chu Chu Rocket or Trials.

Using slightly older games would be a better leveller as they are more accessible to non specialists.

  • Mushi Futari first level in Ultra mode.
I am a FREE. I am not MAN. A NUMBER.
  • I love the idea of a multi discipline tournament. Is there some such thing already?
  • The original nintendo one was Mario 1 (50 coins) a level on rad racer and tetris.

The 2015 one was smb 1,3 and Dr Mario

Should have a rhythm genre round too. Hard to pick one though.

My love affair with Mushi Futari continues. I am besotted with it and therefore left it out of my proposal for fear of bias.

Yeah - no need for pieces of plastic. Rhythm Paradise would be another good one.

There are 2 player modes. But yeah - it's not great for a competitive setup.

Aye. I thought a TT of a tough SMB level would be apt, but a new custom built level would be better with number of lives lost as the score and time used for deciding ties.

  • There's something intuitively satisfying about a game contest being decided on an unseen videogame.

Mario maker has the bonus of being a game everyone knows how to play but the challenge being completely unknown. Good choice.
  • I'd have Donkey Kong Country

X points for bannanas, x points for lives and x points for levels cleared.

(for those in the know ;) )
He could've just said they came from another planet but seems keen to convince people with his bullshit pseudoscience that he knows stuff. I wouldn't trust him with my lunch. - SG
  • A league. Each player picks their own game, and the mode they'll use. Home fixtures sees them playing their own title, away sees them playing the opponent's.
  • I did one once.

I think it was SMB, Tetris, Chase HQ and Amiga F1.

    I won.

    That'd be fun actually.
  • Im shit at all those games except the grand finale of Starfox where I used to get 100% on every stage. I need to some how get a bye at each stage or spike my competitors drinks and call for random drug testing.
