Top Ten 16 Bit (that isn't Mario or Sonic) ((Or anything from the good old days Pre N64/PS1))
‹ Previous1234567
  • Hello again strangers.

So a long long time ago I decided I'd make a retro mini arcade. But since having a 2nd child I've not had time to do feck all until recently. I finally got around to putting RetroPie onto my Raspberry pi.

I've picked some classy snes Controllers from Amazon but what I really need to know is which games. So without naming ANY Mario or Sonic games... whats your top 10 or even top 5 SNES and Megadrive games?

To be honest the list can be more extensive and include anything 8bit C64, Speccy, NES etc.

No Mario takes a huge bite out the God-tier SNES games (removing three games from the top half of my top ten), so I enjoyed making today's lists as it makes this particular console war a lot less one-sided.  Never played any SNES RPGs, so obviously can't comment on Chrono Trigger et al, other than 'critics and fans say they're good'.
  • Desert Strike and Mortal Kombat II deserve a mention...
    オレノナハ エラー ダ
  • Shadowrun on SNES.
  • A link to the past

    Micro machines

Oh and did anyone say Mario yet?
  • I tried Coolspot... I used to think that was good when I was a kid. Road rash is pretty bad by todays standards too.

But theres a lot on peoples list I've never played so I'll try putting them on the Pi later tonight. Definitely going to try Comix zone because I remember seeing that on GamesMaster and thinking it looked amazing.

  • It's bloody hard.

  • Also, I think Aladdin is better than Cool Spot.
    360 - optimark prime PSN - optimark_prime twitter - @optimark_prime
  • Earthworm Jim rarely gets mentioned in these lists.  The controls could be tighter and it's punishing compared to most modern games, but it's varied, still highly playable and a far better Perry effort than Cool Spot.  I think I'll play the sequel soon, I only ever had a quick go at a mate's house.

Aladdin nearly made my MD list, despite the complete lack of challenge - I don't think I've ever played such a polished game.
  • Cool Spot 2 (Goes To Hollywood) is an abomination!

Ah, fair point. I assumed 'traditional' Mario games though.

  • The essentials kinda in order. At least first 2 or 3 are anyway. I would put these in a top games of all time list.

    Zelda: LttP
    Super Metroid
    Terranigma
    Chrono Trigger
    Final Fantasy VI
    Secret of Mana

    And some 'great' games:

    Shadowrun
    Legend of the Mystical Ninja
    Super Castlevania IV
Contra III (3 Konami games in a row! They used to be good at making games)
    Super Mario Kart
    Super Mario RPG
    F-Zero
    Actraiser
    Soul Blazer
    Illusion of Time

    That'll do for now.
I am a FREE. I am not MAN. A NUMBER.
  • Oh, forgot Super Aleste.
I am a FREE. I am not MAN. A NUMBER.
  • And Zombies! I loved that game!!!
I am a FREE. I am not MAN. A NUMBER.
  • Violinist of hamlyn

I had to look this up to check if it was real.
  • Multiformat Cannon Fodder - best on SNES Earthworm Jim - best on MD Flashback - best on SNES Mortal Kombat Trilogy - best on SNES NBA Jam T.E. - best on SNES NHL 94 - best on MD Rock N Roll Racing - best on SNES Saturday Night Slam Masters - best on SNES Street Fighter 2 - best on SNES Strike Trilogy - best on MD Super Bomberman - best on SNES Super Smash TV - best on SNES Super SWIV/Firepower 2000 - best on SNES WWF Royal Rumble - best on SNES Zombies Ate My Neighbours - best on SNES

    Different games, same titles:

Robocop Vs Terminator: Best on MD
    Jurassic Park: Best on SNES
    Aladdin: Best on MD
Shadowrun: No idea, both supposedly great
TNMT: Tournament Fighters: Best on SNES
    The Terminator: Best on MD
    Batman Returns: Best on SNES
The Adventures of Batman & Robin: Best on SNES, but only because of the insane difficulty of the MD one.
    Sparkster: Never played either properly.
Pirates of Dark Water: Always thought both looked great.

    any more?
  • What's being ignored here is the fact that a few of the games (Cannon Fodder, Flashback, etc.) should be played using the Amiga version.

Since I've mentioned Flashback, I really have to mention Another World.
  • True some of them are better on Amiga but the OP only asked for SNES/MD

Some of these (definitely the bolded) are different games completely and thus not better on one than the other. Thats why I put Aladdin in both individual console lists.
