Results above are as at the voting deadline of 15 January 2015. Anyone who wants to update their list or submit a list, feel free to do so and I will maintain an updated list in the background but won't be changing the results below, maybe just an updated top 10 every now and then if anything changes.

Rules/Guidelines/Instructions

1. List your Top 10 (minimum 5, but can list more than 10) games of the generation. Games released on 360, PS3, Wii, DS, PSP. iOS/Android/WP7 and PC allowed, but only if game was first released during lifetime of one of the consoles. Include a little text to explain why you've voted for a game, if you will.

2. Less than 10 games listed will be taken as a Top 9, 8 or whatever. Less than 5 won't get counted, need to ensure enough votes for I unskewed stats.

3. More than 10, and I'll take the first/top 10 only.

4. Only individual games please, no "Mario Galaxy 1 and 2". Also, Orange Box to be broken down into constituent games etc.

5. If not numbered, I'll take the list as ordered in the post in descending order (i.e. gotg at top, then 2 etc).

6. Posts that say "in no order" will be ignored - there needs to be an order for pointage! (See below)

7. Points allocated similar to F1 racing finishing positions, i.e. 25, 18, 15, 12, 10, 8, 6, 4, 2, 1.

8. Ports, remakes or updates of games from earlier generations are a touchy subject. I will allow them, but I don't expect (m)any to trouble the top end.

9. Only games released in UK allowed, unless it was region free.

Interesting facts 1 – the Galaxies:
7 votes for SMG2, and all 7 voters also voted for SMG1.
SMG1 wins the battle 5-2.

Interesting facts 2 – the Souls:
The Souls games got 16 votes between them. Dark 1 got 11, Demon’s got 4, and Dark 2 somehow managed 2.
No one voted for both a Dark and Demon’s. But the 2 people that voted for Dark 2 also voted for Dark 1 (with Dark 1 thankfully placing higher in their list).

My top 10:

1. Zelda: Skyward Sword. Pure genius in its world and level design, a real audiovisual treat, and a perfect match for the Wiimote Plus. Overall it is so good that I forgive its handholding and other minor faults - and a couple of stupid boss (visual) designs, although the final battle was brilliant.

2. Mario Galaxy 2. Pure amazing fun, just the right level of tricky, so much to do, and more of Nintendo's genius level design. It's an amazing feat in itself that it managed to be better than the first game from just 3 years before it. Speaking of which...

3. Mario Galaxy 1. I didn't want to break my own Rule 4 (may change it!), so this has to go here by default. I find it hard to separate the two. The first gave the amazing return to form for Mario, the new mechanics and ideas and that bloody amazing soundtrack. The sequel 'merely' carried on and improved on it.

4. Journey. Art, innit.

5. Last of Us. The way the world is realised, the setting, the characters, the way the story and characters unfold... a masterpiece in interactive storytelling and immersion. The industry needs more games like this. And the story DLC was just as great.

6. Dark Souls. A game world that feels so coherent and consistent, and a treat to travel through and explore. So much depth to the gameplay and mechanics that I can forgive all the multitude of annoying things. So much that other games can learn from Dark Souls.

7. Halo 3. The pinnacle of the genre. A perfect and so highly replayable campaign, and hundreds of hours of local MP fun. So many memories, ODST and Reach just cannot come close. (I'll pretend 4 didn't happen.)

8. Bayonetta. Another game that is at the top of its league. So technical and advanced, and again so highly replayable.

9. Portal 1. Best script in a game I have come across, and it was great fun to boot. One of the only games to ever make me laugh out loud.

10. Super Street Fighter IV. The best fighting game ever got better. Hundreds of hours both online and offline, started a community of fighter fans getting together. And it will still be played way into the future.

I have yet to play/finish and which may feature in my final list at some point in the future if I redo my top 10, replacing something:

As much as you guys love LttP, if it came out fresh this gen, with no nostalgia or hype or history it would be a niche title and actually surpassed byit's peers.

it was an amazing game back when but to argue it is better than even it's later version is mental.
