How was the last generation, then?
‹ Previous123
  • Looking back, how was it for you?  Yes I know the current gen still has legs in it and I for one am keeping my 360 for a good while yet as I still have stuff I want to play.

But what were your highlights over the last 7/8 years?  Lowlights?  What games stood out?  What games made you feel a bit ill?  Best gaming experiences online?  Coolest features?  Coolest apps?  Stuff you can't wait to see/play again?  Stuff you NEVER want to see/play again?

Overall, the best gaming console & experience of last gen was ____________ and why, in your opinion?

Please, no arguments.  Let's all be awesome to each other.  Include PC gaming stuff too, by all means.
  • It was the generation that I was (still am) most involved in since I had my Spectrum many years ago.

    Highlights:
Storming the beach in Halo Reach.
    Discovering the submarine in Uncharted.
    Discovering the Edge Forum.
Playing Forza 2 online with forum people.
Completing Mass Effect - my first rpg.

    Lowlights:
    Playing Forza 2 with randoms.
    Online passes.
    Build quality of XBox 360.
    Mass Effect 3

There are many others I'm sure, but those are the things that pop into my head.

So Call of Souls 7 sums up this gen nicely.
  • The last generation was rubbish. Until The Last Guardian is released anyway.
  • Call of souls 7 horse armour.
  • Seems such a long time ago I picked up my first 360 with PD0 and Kameo.
Hard to pick out highlights. There were no SOTC, Tomb Raider style standouts really. This gen seems more a gradual all round improvement.

    Highlights:
    Mass Effect
    Portal
    Halo 3

    Lowlights
    Dumbing down of Mass Effect
    Red ring of death
    That fucking Metro interface
http://horganphoto.com My STILL under construction website
    PSN : superflyninja
  • Started slow. Picked up in the middle. Ran out of ideas in the final third.
  • What a tough question...without thinking too much about it.

    Highlights:
-Xbox Live for far too many reasons
    -Achievements
-Halo, in particular Halo 3 MP
-The Gears Franchise and its MP
    -CoD
    -Uncharted's
    -Mass Effect franchise
    -Bioshock 1&2
    -DeadSpace 1&2

    Lowlights:
    -CoD
    -Too Human
    -Online Passes
    -The next gen thread
  • Highlights:
    Grid
    Mass Effect (the whole series)
    PGR 3
    GTA V
    Elder Scrolls IV and V
    Saints Row
The rise of cheap, digital games of ridiculous quality
    The explosion of online gaming

    Lowlights:
The explosion of retailer-specific pre-order DLC
    Online passes
The general gouging on many DLC prices (especially for such meagre amounts of content)
  • The highlight for me was definitely Dark Souls and the many excellent PvP sessions I had, occasionally with people from here. The low point was my hdd breaking and losing everything last month.
  • Good stuff:

Playing 2v2 FIFA sessions with a good friend most Friday nights
    Xbox Live
    PGR 3 & 4
    Saints Row 3 Co-Op
    XBL Party Chat
    Gears of War (the original)
Battlefield: BC 2 (superb single and multiplayer)
    Far Cry 3 (IMMMENSE!)
Wii Sports when it first arrived was fun
1 VS 100 WAS THE BEST FUN ON FRIDAY NIGHTS
ROCK BAND WAS IMMENSE FUN ON FRIDAY NIGHTS TOO
    The Last Of Us
    Uncharted 2
...and loads of other stuff I can't remember.

    Bad stuff:

    Online Passes
Xbox Live Avatars (the gamerpics were waaaay cooler)
Angry kids sending me abusive messages on FIFA when I whip their arses
    RROD

  • 360 joypad is a great call, that should have gone into my list.
  • Oh and ARKHAM ASYLUM!  Awesome.

Went to shit after that though :(

And mine. I can't wait to hold the One pad but I am slightly worried it won't be as perfect.
  • One pad is supposed to be "as you were" - basically full of awesome once again.

If only for Street Fighter 4?
    The last gen wasn't bad.

Nowhere near as good as the Playstation/N64 vintage though.

No way dude! JUSTIFICATION!!! And by the way I don't mean it in an argumentative way I'd just like to know why you think that.
  • So many highlights,

    - COD 4 online at christmas
    - Mass Effect trilogy especially carrying my Shepard save over 3 games.
    - Dead Space for bringing good old survival horror back
    - Fallout 3, exploring the wasteland was a joy
    - Xcom on classic mode / ironman. Sitting there in shock when my 50+ kill general (Jack O'Neil) was murdered in cold blood.
    - Taking the lift down to Rapture and when i first laid eyes on it going "what the fuck" and beaming like a 7 year old kid at xmas
-Replaying Half Life 2 as part of Orange Box
-Agent York in Deadly Premontion letting me live out the gaming eqivalent of Twin Peaks
    - Finally getting to be Batman

but the one that really stands out for me is re-discovering my gaming manhood or so to speak..DARK SOULS. Completing that game is like a gaming badge of honour. You only need to mention the name of that game to another gamer and its the nod and twinkle in the eye which says.." yes, bro...i have been through all the pain....but in the end i beat that bitch..."

    Lows -

Not having played the ps3 exclusives
Not having played the Wii exclusives
    Nintendo releasing the WiiU
    Still no KOTOR
    Mass Effect 3

There was alot of innovation in that generation (PS1), across the breadth of the entire industry. From high technology, to the redefinition of specific genres.

I mean you have redbook audio, and 3D graphics in the first instance, then you have the games themselves.

The list of paradigm shifting games from that era include:

    Grand Turismo
    Half Life
    Mario 64
    Grand Theft Auto
    Ocarina of Time
    Parappa the Rapper
    Quake

I'm not even thinking too hard about this at the moment, and others will have other titles to add to such a list, but the generation past hasn't added much to the innovation from that era.

    Face it.

But I do expect big things from the generation to come.

Culturally, and technically, computer technology has come a long way. One might argue that this is the generation in which the games industry mounts the first real assault on the incumbent forces of Apple and Facebook...

Sparks will have to fly, otherwise we're all be doomed to an online wasteland in which everyone will post pictures the last meal that they ate, and every desktop PC will have one button...

  • Best thing from last gen: LEFT 4 DEAD. Every game should be L4D.
  • Massive highs:

    Mario Galaxy
Xbox Live - more specifically COD4 as its easily my most played game online.
    Portal 1&2
    The Uncharted series
Mass Effect - still not got round to 3 yet
    XBLA

    Massive Lows:

    Bioshock Infinite
    Move/Kinect - no more please
    DLC
RROD and fan noise (my 360 is literally the loudest thing ever)

I wanted to say that too.

Probably the only game found to do anything new last gen, but you could argue that Zelda 4 Swords did it first (and better too).
